589.0. "CAT5 bldg wiring without patches OK for small sites?" by NWD002::KOPEC_ST (Squash:Racketball::Chess:Checkers) Tue Dec 28 1993 13:52

I am configuring a DEChub 90 solution for a savings bank with 40 branches.
The LAN solution will be 10BASET using 1-2 DECrepeater 90T's per hub
based upon the number of drops in each branch. DECagent 90s will be used in
each branch with HUBwatch in the Service Center where we will be managing
the hubs from.

My question has to do with building wiring. I am looking at the
suggestion for structured wiring that is outlined on page 3-29 of the "OPEN
DECconnect Applications Guide". In our case, there will be minimal moves,
adds and changes in the branch, plus most of the branches will have
only 3-8 drops! In these small environments, is there any reason why we
could not simply run the 4-pair building wiring cable directly into the
RJ45 jacks on the 90T's and the PC Ethernet cards, ie NO patch cables,
    patch panels, etc...

					Thx, Stan

PS Also, who is the manufacturer of this CAT5 H8245-A/C bldg wiring
cable listed in the catalog and what is the part number from that
	manufacturer? Is it ATT? thx...

I just saw that the TEFLON version of the 4 pair wiring (H8246-a) is
39 cts per foot. What is this gold-plated cable? Looks like we'll
have our sub supply the CAT5 cable to us at a fraction of the cost...

My same question (in .0) still holds though.

						Thx, Stan
