577.0. "What will be possible when DB900MX ships?" by STRWRS::KOCH_P (It never hurts to ask...) Tue Dec 21 1993 17:13

    After reviewing this notesfile, I understand that you can't segment any
    of the repeater devices to appear on an IMB.

    However, what I need to do is to allocate a particular module to a
    single IMB and bridge them all together using the DECbridge 900MX. I
    assume this will work? In this way, I get a semblance of multiple
    Ethernets all bridged together.

    The key is, what is the interface which will allow me to do this? Is
    Hubwatch the only method? If so and it won't be ready, I think previous
    notes are asking if A procedure can be developed to let us "hand craft"
    these solutions for our customers. If we can at least do it once and
    then leave it alone, that would be of great advantage to us.

577.1HUBwatch in MarchSLINK::HOODI'd rather be surfingTue Dec 21 1993 17:191
The version of HUBwatch which will support this will be shipping in March.

    I hope I stated my problem correctly. I need to allocate each module to
    a seperate IMB and then bridge all these IMBs together via the
    DECbridge 900MX. Is this the question you answered?
577.3V3.0 will support thisQUIVER::HAROKOPUSTue Dec 21 1993 18:086
    Yes, You will be able to do this with HUBwatch V3.0. However,
    you need to check the limitations of the individual modules that
    you wish to LAN hop to make sure that they support your desired
    configuration.

    Technically, HUBwatch will not be needed since the management is all
    standard SNMP using published MIBs (our chassis MIB).

       BUT

    Version 3.X of the MAM Firmware will be needed and it comes out at the
    same time as HUBwatch 3.0.

       AND

    Using these MIBs is not easy (just ask the HUBwatch developers :-)
    Figuring out how to configure the backplane will require some doing.

    That is the key. Can we all put ideas forth on what we'll need to make
    sure that the basic are covered?

    > That is the key.

    Sorry - lost the thread there - what is the key?

    > Can we all put ideas forth on what we'll need to make
    > sure that the basic are covered?

    That is part of what this notesfile is for - also the product managers.

    	I was being obtuse.

    	The question is whether the DECbridge 900MX will ship before the
    V3.x MAM & HUBWatch? If it does, what will be able to configure?
577.8QUIVER::SLAWRENCEWed Dec 22 1993 16:2718
    Yes - the plan is that both the DECbridge 900 MX and the
    DECconcentrator 900MX will be available on some limited basis (don't
    ask me to define limited) before the time at which all of:

       MAM support for FDDI lan hopping
       HUBwatch support for FDDI and both above products
       New firmware upgrades for the early ship units to take
           advantage of the above.

    In short, if you get/sell/install/service or otherwise come in contact
    with one of those early units: REMEMBER WHERE IT IS so you can get it
    and its supporting stuff upgraded when the time comes.

    You will of course be able to do lots of stuff with the front panel
    connectors on these...

    [if you don't like the above answer, don't shoot me; I'm just the
    messenger - SDL]
577.9STRWRS::KOCH_PIt never hurts to ask...Wed Dec 22 1993 17:021
    Can you define "FDDI lan hopping"?
577.10QUIVER::SLAWRENCEWed Dec 22 1993 17:291
    XXX lan hopping is the ability to run XXX over the 900 backplane.
