    I would appreciate if someone would comment on the following customer
    situation.
    
    He currently uses DELNI's for his backbone. He currently uses DECserver
    200's and DEMSA based routers. He also has VAX's attached to his DELNI.
    
    We are in the process of migrating him to a hub (90) based environment.
    Because of current levels of investment in hw we must coexist with his
    current environment. So we are connecting the hub to the DELNI through
    the 90 repeater.
    
    However, we are having the following problem:
    
       The old equipment requires heartbeat. The repeater chokes on it.
       If I turn off HB then the DECservers take 20+ minutes to perform
       host load. I also see many network errors etc. If I turn it on then
       the hub gets hosed.
    
    Solution:
    	a) I can leave it on and replace the repeater with a bridge. This
           is a waste of customer money and appears kludgy.
    	b) Place a DESTA between devices(?). Again seems kludgy. 
	c) I can disable HB on the cable between the DELNI and reapeter by
    	   clipping pin(?). Kludgy and unsupported.
    
    Does anyone have a better solution? Is there something I've missed?

Both the X25router 2000 and DECrouter 2000 software have fix kits that take care of the HEARTBEAT problem. DECserver 200's don't need it. You cannot disable heartbeat by clipping wires in the cable. Heartbeat is a signal on the collision detection pair of the transciever cable. Cutting these would mean you could not detect collisions at all and would create its' own set of problems. 	Thanks for the response. My customers environment is as follows: DECserver 200's - Version 3.1 BL 37 DECrouter 2000's - Version 1.1 BL 11 Question: To resolve the previously stated issue of HB, what software do I need and how do I get it? Thanks, Dan

	The DECserver's are ok, the DECrouter's should be at V1.2 BL15, it they are running DECrouter 2000 Software. You can get the latest patch DECrouter patch from the CSC.

	Are your DECserver 200s configured for CONSOLE PORT NONE? DECserver 200s will not load without heartbeat _if_ the console port is defined "NONE" _and_ they have old ROMS. You cannot discern the ROM version from the SHOW SERVER info. either. I submitted a STARS article on this which ended up with a somewhat obscure title.
