I just read an article in Aug 16 edition of Network World announcing the DEChub 900. The details of the hub as represented in this article are inconsistent whith what I thought I knew about the DEChub 900. Specifically: "...the DEChub 900 will support a multiswitch extension backplane that will occupy two of the hub's eight slots." "Each Ethernet module will support eight ports, meaning the DEChub 900 can support as many as 48 Ethernet ports." "The channelized multiswitch backplane will allow users to create a maximum of 12 logical Ethernet segments." At first (i.e., the beginning of this note entry) I thought that this article WAS the Digital press release on the DEChub 900, but now after re-reading, I see that the article begins by saying "Digital..., this week will enter the high end hub market..." which implies that this is prior to the Aug 18 press release. However, if indeed the statements made within this rag are incorrect, I hope that Digital insists upon an article correcting the misinformation. Mgc

364.1 | 'inaccurate' is an understatement | DELNI::GIUNTA | Tue Aug 31 1993 10:01 | 26
I just received a copy of that article, and to say it is inaccurate is an understatement. Some corrections: The DEChub 900 has 8 slots, none of which are taken up by the matrix switch or management cards. The 8 slots can each have a module in it. The matrix switch is actually part of the hub, and is accessed through the bottom connector on the hub (the top connector is what the DEChub 90 modules plug into). Each Ethernet module (DECrepeater 900TM) can support 32 ports for a maximum of 256 ports per hub if you were to fill each of the 8 slots with a repeater. And there are 18 segments on the DEChub 900. The top has 4 channels where there are 2 Token Rings, 1 Ethernet and 1 technology independent channel. The bottom (matrix switch) has 14 technology independent channels, so you could conceivably make up to 16 Ethernet segments if you made all the technology independent channels into Ethernet segments. I believe that the Marketing folks are planning to get this corrected in print, but I don't have the status. We all just got back from Interop where the DEChub 900 was introduced and shown, and a copy of this article was distributed yesterday. And we got a great response at Interop, so we'll be doing everything we can to make sure an accurate picture is painted of the DEChub 900. Cathy
364.2 | another article | DELNI::GIUNTA | Tue Aug 31 1993 11:56 | 3
I just got a copy of an article from the latest Network World where the facts have been straightened out on the DEChub 900. You might also want to check that out.

Any idea why NetworkWorld did not test any of our switches in the March 4 issue?
364.4 | We're probably proceeding cautiously.... | NETCAD::BATTERSBY | Tue Mar 12 1996 11:01 | 8
I would hazard (and of course this is my personal opinion not based on any concrete facts), that based on our previous experiences with NetworkWorld (see previous notes), and based on our recent experiences with DataComm, we're probably just proceeding cautiously before exposing ourselves to another test debacle where there *may* be inadequate assurances that the testers know what they are doing.
