351.0. "SOme DECbrouter Protocol Translation questions" by CENPCS::BIRMINGHAM (Does anyone know who is in charge here...) Tue Aug 24 1993 16:25
Greetings,
I am currently delivering consulting services to a banking industry
customer here in Charlotte, NC. Our customer is using three methods of
terminal connectivity - LAT from the LAN in Charlotte, X.29 calls from X.25
PAD equipment brought in over a satellite-based X.25 private network, and
TELNET via an extended LAN segment connected to the Charlotte backbone LAN
segment and TCP/IP Services for VMS. The terminals connect to a VAXcluster
consisting of two VAX6610's and a VAX7610.
After reading the Sales Update description of the DECbrouter90, and
the information about protocol translation, specifically the LAT-TELNET-LAT
and the X.25-LAT translations, the data suggests that this product may be
effective is solving some current and future issues for us regarding termnal
connectivity. However, the SPD and Sales Update article fall short of
providing the necessary technical information.
Can you please provide answers to the following questions:
1. What is the part number for the DECbrouter 90 Technical Manual and
DECbrouter Management Guide ? Are they available over the Easynet ?
2. Can I accomplish the following connectivity:
2.A VAX <-> LAT Protocol <-> DECbrouter90 <-> IP-Network <-> TELNET Host
Can a PC Workstation using TCP/IP place a TELNET call to the
DECbrouter90 and get connected via LAT to the VAXcluster AND
take advantage of load-balancing in a manner similar to a LAT based
terminal server ?
2.B
VAX <-> LAT Protocol <-> DECbrouter90 <-> X.25 PSDN <-> X.25 PAD <-> VT420
Can a VT420 terminal user connected to a PAD call the X.25 DTE
address associated with the DECbrouter X.25 PSDN connection and get
connected to the VAXcluster AND take advantage of load-balancing in a
manner similar to a LAT based terminal server ?
3. If the answer to 2.A is YES, then how is the IP to LAT host address
translation performed ? Is it static assignment or dynamically
assigned ?
4. If the answer to 2.A is YES, how many TELNET calls can a single
DECbrouter90 handle ?
5. If the answer to 2.A is YES, how do I create an outgoing call to
an TELNET capable host ( probably DS90TL) for doing printing ?
6. If the answer to 2.A is YES, can I send IP over an X.25 datalink
( I may want to use the satellite network and migrate from X.29
calling to TELNET) ?
7. If the answer to 2.B is YES, then how many Switched Virtual
Circuits can a single DECbrouter90 handle ?
8. If the answer to 2.B is YES, how do I create an outgoing call to
an X.25 PAD for doing printing ?
9. If the answer to 2.B is YES, will the incoming calls be load
balanced between VAX systems in the cluster ?
10. If the answer to 2.B is YES, how do I create an outgoing call to
an X.25 PAD for doing printing ?
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.
Regards,
George Birmingham
