349.0. "dechub 1 and dechub 90 interoperability " by TMAWKO::PRESSLEY (pin heads are people too...) Mon Aug 23 1993 15:52

I need some clarification on the dechub 1 product.

first can I install a dechub 90 module without powersupply into the
dechub 1? Assuming I can does this mean that we are no longer restricted
to thinwire connections when running a standalone dechub 90 module since
it's my understanding that the dechub 1 comes with an aui port and in order
to attach to fiber,10baseT, or thinwire you need to order the appropriate
MAU?

PS: Why is it we have MAU's that go from AUI to whatever but not the
other way around?

You cannot install a DEChub 90 module into a DEChub ONE. The DEChub ONE
(DEHUA) is made to accept DEChub 900 MAX modules such as the DECrepeater 900TM
and DECserver 900TM.

    What *is* a DEChub ONE. I know what a DEChub 90 is and what a DEChub
    900 is. Are there really three hubs?

349.3marketing name for single-slot hub or docking stationDELNI::GIUNTAWed Sep 01 1993 13:3011
DEChub ONE is the marketing name for the docking station that goes with
the MAX modules to make them stand-alone. We call it a single-slot hub for
a bunch of reasons including to get those products on all the marketing
comparisons of hubs so that we get more exposure on our products. The
part number for the docking station is the DEHUA, and it comes with rack-mount
hardware as part of the package. The DEHUA has an AUI off the back so that
we can connect to thickwire from the stand-alone version, or you can order
one of the mini-MAU's (DEFLM, DECXM, or DETPM) for fiber, ThinWire, or
Twisted Pair to the backbone connections. It also has an out-of-band
management port and a console port on it.

    DEChub ONE is a single slot backplane that allows the DEC*** 900
    modules to be used standalone. It provides power, Out of Band
    management port, set up port, and network connection (by default
    AUI and if others are needed you plug in the appropriate MAU).
    The part # for the Ethernet version is DEHUA. Configured this way
    you have all of the same capabilities standalone that you have in
    the multi-slot DEChub 900MS. The module can be placed on a desk,
    shelf, or rackmounted. This capability allows us to directly compete
    against the rack and stack hub vendors.

349.5eXPANDING the DEChub-ONE still further ....TENTO1::GREENRCuriosity Killed The CatTue Sep 14 1993 17:2331
    I have some want's that I would like to see in the DEChub-ONE product,
    any plans for the following:

    1:	A big push by all the major hub manufacturers at present are
    stackable hubs. Why not also produce a DEChub-ONE that offers a cabled
    version of the Technology Independent backplane as used in the DEChub
    900. We could then offer single slot hubs, stackable hubs and chassis
    hubs all with the same base product set, what a selling point over the
    competition.

    2: Even without the above stackable docking station we shoul refrain
    from just saying that with a DEChub-ONE installed we now have a single slot
    hub or standalone unit. We also have a "Stackable Unit", well just as
    stackable as the HP offering who's so called stackable hub is
    interconnected via ThinWire !

    3: We should also offer a docking station (DEChub-ONE) without multiple
    ethernet AUI's and allow the future per port switching DECrepeater
    900's to have ports assignable to any of these ethernets. This would
    then give us effectively a multi backplane single slot hub.

    4: When we introduce per port switching repeaters we should also be
    able to isolate from the backplane and then configure ports into
    multiple independent groups. Imagine the capability that this could
    offer. We could then effectively claim that our DEChub 900 can support
    and almost limitless number of seperate ethernet lans.

349.6STRWRS::KOCH_PIt never hurts to ask...Fri Oct 29 1993 17:374
    In regard to the DEChub ONE, what purpose does it serve when it's
    attached to a DECconcentrator 900MX?

    Or is there a variant available for the 900MX?
349.7Power, of course, and...QUIVER::SLAWRENCEMon Nov 01 1993 10:085
    The DEChub ONE provides the concentrator with an Out of Band Managment
    port and the setup console port. The AUI port won't be used.
    Eventually there will be a version with FDDI in place of the AUI, but I
    don't think that will come out with the first FDDI products.

349.8STRWRS::KOCH_PIt never hurts to ask...Mon Nov 01 1993 11:524
    Where can I get details on the FDDI DEChub One? I'd be interested in
    knowing whether it will have configurable PMDs, for example. If it has
    these, we essentially could get a 6-port concentrator in a box with A/B
    ports on the DEChub One (SM, MM, Copper) adapter.
