321.0. "How many Brouter per hub ?" by HGOVC::GUPTA () Mon Aug 02 1993 06:35

    How many DECbrouter 90s can be installed in one DEChub 90 ?

    Will the following configuration work ?

    		,------------------,
    	  	| D | B | B | B |  |
    		| B | R | R | R |  |
    		|   | U | U | U |  |
    		| 9 | T | T | T |  |
    		| 0 |   |   |   |  |
    		`------------------'
                  |    3xT1/E1 lines
    BACKBONE <----'

    Technically, BRUT will/can bridge too, which means that all LANs that
    BRUT will bridge will appear on the WorkGroup side of DB90 and hence
    there will almost certainly be more than 200 stations on the WorkGroup
    side of DB90.

    Alternative ? Replace DB90 with some other bridge - LANBridge 200 ?

    Thanks and regards,
    Surender

321.1No slot restrictions on DECbrouter 90NAC::FORRESTTue Aug 03 1993 16:419
	Newer DECbridge 90s will go into Flood mode when the station count
	exceeds 200. You can also disable the bridging on the DECbrouter
        if its not needed.

	If you know you're going to have a lot more than 200 nodes in
	the configuration, and you have to have the DECbrouters do
	bridging, then you should probably go with a LANbridge 200.

In this scenerio, if the brouters are indeed set to bridge then aren't you
violating the end node bridge rule of the DB90? If this is the case and
you are using a DB90 which supports flood mode then once you install a
brouter into the hub does the db90 essentially become a repeater?
321.3DB90->LB200 if BRUT=BridgingHGOVC::GUPTAThu Aug 05 1993 22:2811
    I will replace DECbridge 90 with LANbridge 200 in case the customer
    insists that BRUT should bridge too.

    At the moment, I am using BRUTs only for routing on T1/E1 lines and I
    will write this very clearly in the proposal as well.

    The point that comes out very clearly from this note is that I can fill
    the whole DEChub 90 with BRUTs.

321.4DECbridge 90 in flood mode is not a repeaterNAC::FORRESTMon Aug 09 1993 13:407
	re .2:
	Even in flood mode, the DECbridge 90 will still separate collision
	domains. It will also filter out the runt packets, the too long
	packets, framing errors, etc. In a number of ways, it is much better
	than having a repeater.

    Is it safe to say then that once a second bridge is inserted into the
    hub where the first bridge is a decbridge 90 that the decbridge 90 will
    go into flood mode since it is an end node bridge?

    Is the decbrouter 90 also an end node bridge?

    I think we need to discuss DECbridge 90 as one unit and not in any way
    connected to other modules in the hub. All this discussion about DB90
    is becuase of the limited size of the Forwarding Database (200
    stations). For this reason, DB 90 is not a backbone bridge (bridging
    two backbones). Moreover, ONLY ONE DB90 is supported inside a hub (8/16
    slot) for so many hardware/software reasons.

    DB90 will enter into Flood Mode (if enabled) only when 200 stations
    limit is exceeded. This has nothing to do with the presence or
    otherwise of BRUTs.

    I am not sure about the similar limitations about BRUTs when it is
    configured for bridging functions. Can anyone help on this point ?

    Re .3

    Can I ask for clarification that the point stated in .3 stands; ie:-

    #The point that comes out very clearly from this note is that I can fill
    #the whole DEChub 90 with BRUTs.

    I am looking at a configuration which will require 4 Brouter 90s T2 in
    the same hub. Is this supported ?

    Thanks

    You can get specific support on the DECbrouter in KALI::DEWBR

    I believe there is no limit on the number you can put in a hub.
321.9I thought the limit was 8. 8^) 8^)CGOS01::DMARLOWEdsk dsk dsk (tsk tsk tsk)Mon Dec 13 1993 13:282
