295.0. "SNMP does not report correctly." by KETJE::PACCO (Gallia divisa est in partes tres) Thu Jul 08 1993 15:28

It seems there is a problem with the description field
in the terminal server, as reported by its SNMP agent.

The following discussion will clarify this point.

    Regards,
    	Dominique.

I always get an error with the MIB query utility under
    MCC V1.3 / ULTRIX

    mgkk01> mcc_tcpip_mq mgkk01 1 1

    tcpip_IO_init returned status = 0

Anything wrong with this utility ?

    	Regards,
    	Dominique.

Although the new version of the query utility I copied, I stil
    have the same problem:

    mgkk01> mcc_tcpip_mq mgkk01 1 1

    tcpip_IO_init returned status = 0

    mgkk01> ls -l mcc_tcpip_mq
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root 1183744 Jun 8 18:49 mcc_tcpip_mq

Is that status "normal" or "abnormal" ? It is exact the same status as
I got with the query utility distributed with V1.3.
I executed that utility on my local DECstation (ULTRIX V4.3), on a
DECnis and on a terminal server. Al give the same result.

Is the utility wrong or the environment ?

    	Dominique.

Are you sure you are running the correct version? I do not see
any execute permission on the file you copied, so you should get
"Permission denied". I just tried running the mib query utility
on my system, and it ran fine.

    Rahul,

I used to work on VMS for a long time, and this kind of behaviour
    is somewhat misleading.

Yes, the PATH specifies first /usr/mcc/mmexe, and only after that
my own directory. Thats why I tought I was executing your file, but in
fact I executed the old one once more ! Thats also why the
    non-executable file apparently executed !

I still love VMS... I still h... ULTRIX.

    Thanks, Dominique.

Did you run mcc_tcpip_mq on one of our DECserver-90 TL's ?

    Here is the output:

    mcc_tcpip_mq tgkk02 1 1

    var_bind_list_put returned status = 52875162

And if I start from one OID higher...the program loops at the end:

Which agent are you talking to? Can you get the data back properly

ASN.1 enoding which the mib query utility cannot handle.

    Rahul,

Sorry for my delay, but last week I was teaching courses, therefore
I had no time to continue on this problem.

I used a DECserver 90-TL for the MIP QUERY.

To see how it behave, in comparison with an ULTRIX system I gave the
    following two commands:
MCC> sho snmp tgkk02 all attr
MCC> sho snmp ngkk02 all attr
The first on the terminal server, te second on an ULTRIX system.

It seems the agent does something strange ! Should I report this
    to the DEChub group ?

	Dominique,

You should definitely report the problem to the DEChub people. There
is a bug in the agent.
