237.0. "DEChub 900 and HUBwatch questions" by ZPOVC::INDO03::FUNGSIONG (Friday Again? Thanks God!) Thu May 13 1993 08:12

Hi,

I need some info on DEChub 900. If the info are too long, please
point me to the public information I can get on the network.
Thanks in advance!

Questions:

1. DEChub 900 supports only switching on the DEChub 900 MS (is
this correct?) Is it equal to a bridging function between
these segments? I believe it is more similar to our GigaSwitch
capability, that is as a switch it provides each segments 10
   Mbps bandwidth (bridge only isolates...).

2. Please consider this situation:

      +----------------+---------------- segment A
      | |
   backplane sta
      900
      |
      + -------------------------------- segment B

    a. Can we switch the station connections from segment A to
	segment B by software ?
    b. Is there any effect for the people already using the
network? (e.g., hang while logging in...)
    c. Can we use HUBwatch to manage DEChub 900?
	Do we need DECagent 90?
    d. Can HUBwatch do the 2a. function above?

    1. There will only be one version of the DEChub 900 and that will be
the 900MS. Switching is not similar to bridging. Essentailly you can
switch any module to any one of 10 technology independent rails
(ethernet segments). Total bandwidth of the switch is aroudn 2 gig.

    2. a,d. Switching from one segment (rail) to another can only be done
by HUBwatch software or very complex SNMP. This is a logical switch
that uses 72 lines of etch to set up the needed circuits.

    b. no effect on people using it that I have heard of. (I'm not the
    expert on this).

    c. HUBwatch v2.0 will manage both the DEChub 900MS and the DEChub 90.
    HUBwatch always manages all DEChubs......
You do not need a DECagent 90 in the DEChub 900 to manage repeaters.
YOu do need a DECagent somewhere on the LAN to manage DECbridge 90's
and DECserver 90 L/ L+. The rest of the modules have integral SNMP
agents and do not need a DECagent 90 at all.
