188.0. "Slot dependent" by HGOVC::LEUNGWINGKIN () Tue Mar 16 1993 10:09

    Hi,

    As there is getting more and more new modules that can be plugged into
    the DEChub 90 backplane, can anyone help to point out which modules can
    be installed in any slot and which modules must be installed in Slot 7
    & 8 of the backplane?  I know that 90T, 90C, 90L+, 90TL and 90FL are
    slot independent while 90B, 90FB and DECagent must be in slot 7 or 8.
    How about 90FA, WANrouter 90, WANbrouter 90 and those new coming
    modules such as muxserver and ISDN router?

    Thanks in advance for clarification.

188.1Slot 7 and 8: 12V?VNABRW::VNADS4::BOECK_PWed Mar 17 1993 03:3417
I think many of us having this problem.

We read the manuals and that could be an explanation:

Every modul that must be in slot 8 or 7 requires 12 V (AUI, serial
ports..).

Is that right?

Are there any manuals about network-design using DEChubs?
Today we have to work like "Hackers" to steel some information about DEChub
from different locations.

    Your request for this in the manuals is right on. Slot 7 & 8 provide
    12 volt which is needed for AUI, brouter and a few others. Configuring
    Your LAN EC_N0011-29 has this in a brochure.

    This problem does not exist in the DEChub 900.

    What about the DECrepeater 90FA? I can't find fro manual how much V
    it'll need, but it has an AUI connector?
188.5Half of the 90FA is slot independentQUIVER::GAUDETTue May 25 1993 12:415
    The DECrepeater 90FA will repeat through the fiber connection only if
    it is plugged into slots 1-6 of a DEChub 90. The AUI port will work if
    the 90FA is plugged into slots 7 or 8.

188.6Let me rephrase that...QUIVER::GAUDETTue May 25 1993 12:4410
    After reading my reply in .-1, one could come to the conclusion that
    the fiber ports will not work if the 90FA is plugged into slots 7 or 8.
    This is *NOT* true.

    	Slots 1-6:  fiber only
        Slots 7-8: both fiber and AUI

    Sorry if I confused anyone.

188.7Ref .2; BRUT slot independent !?!HGOV08::GUPTAThu Aug 12 1993 00:0420
    Ref .2:

    Hi Bill,

    As per note 321.1 and DECbrouter 90T Installation and Operating Manual
    (Fig 2.8 Page 2.11), BRUT is slot independent. I have an impression
    that I can fill the whole DEChub with BRUTs. Please correct me if I am
    wrong.

    Has the situation changes since the days that note (188.2) was written
    ? What is the current position ? In fact based on the information I
    had, I have proposed three BRUTs in one DEChub (config as shown in
    321.0).

    I think, we need one manual describing these slot limitation on all the
    DEChub modules that exist to-day and planned for future.

    Regards,
    Surender

	Bruts (DECbrouter 90s) can go in any slot - you can put 8 in
	one hub, or 7 plus a DECbridge 90, if you want to read the slot
	configuration remotely.

	Such a brochure exists, but only in hardcopy. It's called
	"DEChub family of Networking Products Quick Reference"
	The order number is EB-N0074-29. I think it came out in February
	of this year. It doesn't talk about any products that were still
	unannounced when it was published. But to my knowledge, the only
	modules that require 12V (slots 7 and 8) are those with an AUI
	port, (ie. the DECbridge 90 and 90FL, the DECrepeater 90FA) and
	the DECagent 90, which needs the 12V for its Flash memory.
