OKay, I thought I understood how all the relationships between DECbridge90, DECrepeator90, MOP, RBMS, DECelms, DECmcc ELM, DECagent, HUBwatch, DECmcc SNMP (phew!!, what did I leave out). BUT ... I just got a SIMPLE question from a potential customer and can't figure out the answer. Customer "A" would like to turn ON/OFF a DECrepeater 90C port from a script on a VAX. He knows he has to: 1) buy a DECbridge90 2) buy a DEChub90 3) plug the DECbridge90 and DECrepeator90 into the DEChub90 What we need to figure out is the choices for HW/SW to effect the management which will allow DECrepeator90C ports to be turned ON/OFF from a VMS script. Please warn me us of any DECbridge90 firmware updates required, if any. Here is what I know: - using NCP CONNECT to the bridge with a DCL script doesn't work due to the way that feature works under VMS (something about SYS$INPUYT not being able to be redirected) - DECelms is out, it hasn't (and won't) support any DECxxx90 componenets - DECmc ELM is a possibility. V1.0 did not support DECbridge90 but I thought it was eventually going to. V1.2 SPD is not available yet. April 13th SPD doesn't say. Here is what I don't know: - if DECmcc ELM will support only DECbridge90 - if DECmcc ELM will support DECrepeater ports through the DECbridge90 - Do they need DECmcc SNMP access module to accomplish this? - Do I need to buy HUBwatch on a 386 PC and plug the PC comm port into a reverse LAT port on a DECserver 90mumble and write a script to control the PC to control the DECbridge90 to control the DECrepeater? God I hope not :-)

42.1 | DECmcc ELM V1.2 and DEWGB | SLINK::CHILDS | Ed Childs | Tue Apr 21 1992 14:42 | 6 |
| - if DECmcc ELM will support only DECbridge90 We've got a DECbridge 90 now and we've got it to respond to some ELM commands. We are going to support as much as we can while meeting our schedule for DECmcc ELM V1.2. It looks pretty good now, but we can't say for sure until we do some more work with the DEWGB. | |||||
42.2 | What is he trying to accomplish with the script? | MEMIT::FORREST | Tue Apr 28 1992 19:44 | 13
From DECmcc MSU, you can run SNMP scripts to turn repeater ports on and off. But you have to buy the DECagent 90 to do that. I don't think they will have time to support the repeater ports off a DECbridge 90 in DECmcc ELM; maybe they'll get lucky. Is it a "time of day" action that the customer wants to take place automatically, by using the script? Please pass on the reasons behind the customer request, so we can include those things on our wish lists for the next release. jack
42.3 | Here's scoop, what about DECagent? | BUDDIE::KORNS | Wed Apr 29 1992 11:04 | 53
This is a fairly esoteric application (laboratory evironment) but I didn't think it was beyond the realm of possiblilty to want to turn ports on/off. Customer is writing scripts for a system test. A workstation involved in the system test needs to be connected to one Ethernet for one sequence of tests and another Ethernet for another sequence of tests. They need to accomplish the switch from a test script (VMS environment). The plan is to connect as shown: ==========LAN-A================================================== | =====================LAN-B================= | | | | | +------------+ +-------------+ +-----+ | DEChub-B | | DEChub-A | | W/S | +------------+ +-------------+ +-----+ | <-DECrptr ports-> | | | | ================thinwire seg===================== The DEChubs are equipped with DECbridges90 and DECrepeater 90Cs. The idea is to have the script (which would run on a system always accessable to both DEChubs) turn on one or the other DECrptr ports so as to connect W/S to LAN-A or LAN-B. From the sound of the previous replies, it seems DECmcc ELM will not likely support this. I'm believe this leaves me with nothing shipping to this. Hence, what about DECmcc SNMP AM and the DECagent90? 1) When will the DECagent90 ship? 2) Will VMS DECmcc SNMP AM be able to manage it (and turn repeater ports on/off?) 3) If shipment is not soon, could I get my customer two DECagent90 field test or early seed units? 4) If DECagent90 is required for my solution, is the DECbridge90 still required to play intermediary to the DECrepeater90s? If anyone knows the appropriate Product Manager to answer this, could you please forward this sring of notes to them and CC: BUDDIE::KORNS. Thanks, Dave |
