30.0. "MJ8 and MMJ comparison" by TENNIS::KAM (Kam USDS (714)261-4133 (DTN 535) IVO) Thu Feb 20 1992 21:24

    Some one mentioned that we're moving away from our MMJ connector
    strategy to a MJ8 strategy. Is the MJ8 an industry standard? Can
    anyone contrast the difference in pin-outs? Are they compatible?
    Who architected the MJ8?

    	thanks

30.1MJ's are industry-standard, so we have no choiceNOHOST::LEVINBryan, LENaC Engineering, MLO3-3/U39Thu Feb 20 1992 22:0512
    It's the best thing we can do for our 'open' message.

    MMJ's (_Modified_ modular jacks) never caught on, (outside of DEC and
    DEC shops). The MJ (Modular jacks) connectors look like the telephone
    connectors (clear plastic, crimped wired), and have a _centered_
    detent, or key.

    The MMJ's have an _off center_ key. Now, even though this makes MUCH
    more sense to use for datacomm (no way to plug one of these into a
    telco jack), they never really caught on. Too bad ...

    The new jacks are also called RJ 45's. they allow six signals out and
    thus can support limited modem control. For more information contact

30.3MJ8 detail from Pete DunbeckEMDS::SEAVERLENAC Net Mgnt Mktg 223-4573Tue Feb 25 1992 19:0025
	The DECserver 90TL and the DECserver 700s used the MJ8 connector
that is the ISO standard implimented within OPEN DECconnect. (it is
also used on the 10BaseT Ethernet and on most modular phone jacks
(RJ45's)). MJ8 has 8 wires, MMJ has 6. The pinouts for the 90TL and
the 700 are the same for the 6 wires that the 90TL uses. The 700 uses
two additional for several signals depending on software configuration.

The DECserver 90TL pinout is as follows:

	Pin #
	  1	RXD GND
	  2	RXD
	  3  	TXD GND
	  4	NOT USED on 90TL .... on 700 depends on Software
	  5 NOT USED on 90TL .... on 700 depends on Software
	  6 	TXD
	  7	DTR
	  8	DSR

This can be used with cable BN24G or BN24H. The part number of the
Octopus cable has not been selected. Various adaptors are available to
go between MMJ and MJ8.

I received this from one of our Distributors that gives some good references.

------------------------------ REPLY TO MESSAGE ------------------------------
The "MJ8" is an RJ45 connector. Its use on the DECServer 700 allows full modem
control capabilities, plus more connectors in a smaller space.

Refer to OPEN DECconnect Building Wiring Components and Applications Catalog
EB-M4506-78. This lists the BN24H-xx and BN24j-xx to go from MMJ to 8MJ.

Pins 4 & 5 of the MJ8 are not used.
     Signals are: 1 TX+
                  2 TX-
                  3 RX+
                  4
                  5
                  6 RX-
                  7
                  8
      When connected to MMJs, pin 7 of the RJ45 goes to Rdy Out on the MMJ
and pin 8 goes to Rdy In.
      The catalog goes into quite a bit of detail and should answer any
questions.

30.5Pin 5 is driven with same state as DTRFORBIN::WILKINSONMon Mar 02 1992 15:0613
With reference to .3, pin 5 reflects the state of DTR, for compatibility
with DS700 signalling:

	Pin #
	  1	RXD GND
	  2	RXD
	  3  	TXD GND
	  4	NOT USED on 90TL .... on 700 depends on Software
	  5 reflects state of pin 7, DTR
	  6 	TXD
	  7	DTR
