20.0. "Boot Rom requirements" by SUBWAY::SMITH () Thu Jan 09 1992 17:29

Is there a policy established about the use of network boot versus BOOT ROM's
for DEChub components?

My customer supplies his online transaction services products through equipment
he installs in his customers' locations. He wants to install telnet terminal
servers that boot from BOOTROM, to avoid dependance on customer network
components.

Is there an obstacle to providing this in upcoming TELNET-based terminal server
products?

Dave Smith

20.1You _have_ to boot this puppy off the netNOHOST::LEVINBryan, LENaC Engineering, MLO3-3/U39Thu Jan 09 1992 20:0525
    If I understand you correctly:

You want to know if the soon-to-come telnet terminal server for the
DEChub can selectively get it's image code from either on-board ROM
    _OR_ via the network?

As I understand it, this server _requires_ a MOP load host to get its
run-time image from. This could be a DECnet host, or something that
    supports MOP DLL capability.

Now, it's documented that the server 'supports BOOTP', but this is
_very_ misleading. Colloquially, BOOTP sort of implies TFTP; a UNIX
"MOP/DLL", if you will. But, I believe that this server uses BOOTP
_just_ to resolve it's IP address, given it's own MAC address. That's
    all.

So, this means that you'll need a MOP load host, or the thing will keep
asking to be fed, ad nauseum ;-)

Does this answer your question? I'm not familiar with any special
meaning to "BOOTROM" that you referred to.

Dave,

I assume by BOOT ROM that you mean a ROM card which is inserted into the
termial server to boot the software. This will not be a feature of the
soon to be announced terminal servers. We are discussing this as a
possible feature for future designs. These would be at least 10-12 months
away.

This note is quite old, but just for the record:

The DS90TL product has a TFTP/UDP/IP stack in the ROM, so the document
is *not* misleading in the least.

No. The server in question indeed does load it's image from BOOTP/TFTP
hosts. Several U*ix systems are supported.

20.5Flash ram on next version?NOHOST::LEVINBryan, LENaC Engineering, MLO3-3/U39Tue Oct 13 1992 19:2910
    RE: .-1

Yes, when I wrote my first reply, it was after I saw a very early
    functional spec.

BTW, I believe the next version of the TL will support flash ram, so
you only have to load its software at upgrade time. (Or am I thinking
    of another product?)

Well, yes. The next product will have Flash RAM. I say this subject
to the Moderator's discretion, because we're talking about unannounced
    product here.
