Works Great! Just wish the offline address book had the option to hold
all details because I would spend the disk space and hold it locally
and syncronize once a week or so.

| Just what is in this address book and how do you view it? I did the download,
foolishly, as I didn't know how big it might be. What file is it kept in?

| >>Just what is in this address book
Validated Exchange recipient addresses, Department (BU), Office (site
Code), Phne (DTN)
>>how do you view it
Bring up the "Address Book" applet. The only way I can find to do this
is to click the little filofax icon on the toolbar. There might be a
menu command but I can't see it.
>>What file is it kept in
Good question Steve. I don't know and I've looked for it 'cos I wanted
to throw some brute force indexer at it. I couldn't find a file that
looked likely. If you run the applet, there is a menu command ;
Tools|Options...
then Select Global Address List (Offline) and look at Properties.
Mine says ;
the current server is : C:\Windows
the directory hierarchy
path for this container is : \Global Address List (Offline)
Not really very meaningful but I can assure you that the GUI
functionality works very nicely indeed - I'd just like to have my own
API into the list for things like a PC-based automatically synchronized
ELF-like application.

| You can Export you Outlok Contacts file whenver you want.
I store copies in a local .pst file on my home system.
It doesn't track changes made at home but that's not a big deal for me.
You could probably manually do stuff about importing, but there might
be an issue with duplicate removal - I haven't played with import much.

and what do you have selected in the drop-down menu box that is titled
"Show names from the:"
Default behaviour with Outlook is to give you you local Contacts first.
If you hit the drop-down arrow, do you not see the option of "Global
Address List (Offline) " indicated?

Not in our implementation. - That is annoying as I am sure it could be
enabled. - It seems to have been disabled with a great concern for
disk space. I'm going to ask one of my engineers to look through the SDK
to see how we can make the directory more functional for Offline
workers.

No, and I am set up for offline use.

Chris,
Thanks for this information.I was really wondering whether
i am missing some step. This was basically required because
right now everybody does not have Exchange account here and
many people want to send SMTP mail to exchange user names.
may be once we have the [email protected] for
all exchange users we will not have any problem.

Jayaram,
Right now you are out of luck. But even if the Offline Address book
did contain SMTP addresses, it wouldn't solve the problem you describe.
e.g. when Online you do have access to SMTP address but this doesn't
cover your non-Exchange users. I think that you are confusing
Exchange's address books (Online, Offline) with a real directory.
We do have an X.500 directory and in theory it is populated with
appropriate SMTP address for all employees (and contractors?). This
is the service that you need - also to get it working in Synchronised
Offline mode - that would be nice. Say a minimum of Info : Name,
Telephone, Function, Location, SMTP address, preferred e-mail address,
a few other things - you are talking about 128 bytes per entry - say
another 128 bytes for overhead and structure = 256 bytes/entry = 25 Mb
local disk space for a 100,000 employee/contractor directory which you
could probably reduce to about 10Mb with compression. I'd buy it!!

1089.15 | try web elf for employee addresses | PARZVL::ogodhcp-124-40-168.ogo.dec.com::kennedy | nuncam non paratus | Tue Jun 03 1997 23:53 | 11 |
| If you have TCP/IP & Web access, go to
http://www-elf.bb.dec.com
(which should allow you to select a server
closer to home).
While there are some data quality problems,
this is uses the X.500 directory which Chris
mentioned .14. It is only Digital employees,
not contractors, but a fair number of Exchange
users do have their SMTP address registered.
