1052.0. "Duplicate SMTP addresses" by SNOFS1::snod14dgp3.gen.sno.dec.com::snov14::craikes () Fri May 02 1997 03:05

All,

I am currently involved in the implementation of a world wide
Exchange network. Currently all SMTP mail is passed through
the one IMC in Sydney, at the moment they have only
registered one domain name therefore all SMTP addresses will
have the same domain. I have configured the address generator
to create SMTP names of the format %g.%s@domain name, by
default Exchange dosen't allow duplicate SMTP addresses in an
organisation through the addition of a number appended to the
name. My question is can the way Exchange deals with
duplicate SMTP addresses be configured or is the addition of
a number the only option.

Regards

Stephen

1052.1You need a tie breaker...DYPSS1::YINGLINGDave (N8UTX), NSIS, Dayton, OH USAFri May 02 1997 22:5212
Stephen,

It has been my experience that the Exchange directory will never permit
duplicate X.400 and SMTP addresses. I don't think that you can change this
behavior since that would be contrary to X.400/X.500 standards (globally
unique addresses). Adding a "tie breaker" (i.e, a number like you suggest
is the work around.

Dave

Dave,

I realise that Exchange won't allow it, my question is that can I configure
the way Exchange implements this "Tie Breaker". Currently If I have two names
the same Exchange will create the following SMTP adresses

stephen.craike@domain
stephen.craike2@domain

the 2 is a bit messy can I alter the may Exchange handles this.

1052.3Some control is better than none...DYPSS1::YINGLINGDave (N8UTX), NSIS, Dayton, OH USAWed May 07 1997 12:4111
Stephen,

I'm sorry I didn't understand your question. The only control that I know
of for the generation of SMTP addresses is documented in Microsoft's
Knowledge Base Article Q153270. If you don't have a TechNet CD, you can
access this document at http://www.microsoft.com/kb .

Dave

Dave,

Thanks for the response, I had come accross this article previously,
unfortunately it only outlines what to do initially not if there is a
duplicate.

Thanks Again

Stephen
