1028.0. "mail notification - how ?" by WOTVAX::16.194.208.3::warder.reo.dec.com::sharkeya (Who am I now ?) Wed Apr 23 1997 15:04

Is there any way of getting my exchange server to notify me when it gets a
new mail ? I do have winpopup running but that doesn't seem to make any
difference.

Only when you are connected do you get a notification.

Do you have an Exchange button on your taskbar [usually at the bot-
tom of the screen, containing all the current processes]?

    Highlight Mailbox - your name
    Click on Tools
    Click on Options
    Click on General Tab
Check the "Display a notification message" (and, if you want, "Play a
    sound") box.

You will now get a little message pop up on your screen when a new mail
arrives asking if you want to read it now or not.

    Hope this helps.

    Jane.

re .3, No, I don't have that in the task bar. What should I do to get one ?

re .4 OK - I'll give that a try. Nope. No difference.

I'm running 95, and a little envelope appears in the right-hand box on
the taskbar when a new mail arrives.

    Cheers, Laurie.

I have a ringing phone noise and a pop-up window on my laptop at
the house ... but I have no sound here so I have to settle for a
    	terminal beep.

And BTW, if you use Auto-hide on your task bar it's harder to see
    	the little envelope. 8^)

Double-click on your In-box icon, if you have one, and connect to
    	your Exchange domain.

1028.8Its my configuration - too advanced for the systemWOTVAX::16.194.208.3::warder.reo.dec.com::sharkeyaWho am I now ?Wed Apr 23 1997 17:3816
It appears that I have a few issues with the config I want.

1. If my PC is in the digital2 domain, the system freezes when the password
prompt for exchange appears. No way out but to have my own domain.

2. If I want to work offline and retrieve mail when I start up ISDN, then I
do not get notification of new mail even if I appear to be online at the
time.

3. If I work offline, then I cannot get at the public folders or my diary
even if I appear to be 'connected'.

So, its going to get expensive for me to work online.......

Aaaahhhhhh...... I think I get it.. You ARE using the Remote
Mail features, aren't you? You aren't dialing in and making
an "interactive" connection to your Exchange Server. You're
just polling it for new mail and disconnecting when you have
	finished downloading.

Am I right? If so, you lose ALOT of features this way.

	No public folder access
	No calendar access

JUST email download and upload access.

You're using it in a way that is not geared to what you
	want it to do.
