Hello, I have a customer who is but one part of a multi divisional company. Most other divisions are using Exhange V4, a few are using ALL-IN-1, he want's to use Exchange version 5. The other divisions have no plan to upgrade to version 5 of Exchange. Will my customer get full funcionality, that is all exchange 4 interoperability from Exchange version 5? He is particularly interested in the Global address list. He will not be entering into the same site as any Exchange 4 systems, or at least at present, into the same NT domains, however trust relationships may exist to domains that contain Exchange 4 servers. Will his GAL work properly? Will he be able to use the X40 site connector between V4 and V5 systems? Can he replicate folders between V4 and V5 Will his V4 clients be able to access the V5 machines and get V4 functionality? Do you know og any co-exixtance issues between V4 and V5 that might cause a problem? I've been checking out microsoft.com, technet and the like but without much luck. Any help that you could give would be greatfully appreciated. R. Michael Williams

Hi Michael, Well, the following is the only information that I have seen published to date with regard to Exchange V4.0 and V5.0 co-existance. It was retrieved from http://www.microsoft.com/ExchangeSupport/content/faq/50-faq.htm Hope it helps a little, Nigel. Administrator: >Can I upgrade or place a Microsoft Exchange Server, version 5.0, into >an existing 4.x Site? >Yes. This is fully supported. The only caveat is that the first server >to be upgraded has to be the Bridgehead server in that Site. This is >because the schema used to store information in the Directory has >changed and in order for proper communications to occur between >servers, the Bridgehead must be the first server upgraded.

Does this mean that some sites can be exchange 4 and some sites be exchange 5? Do we have a problem with a mixed site where machines might be being upgraded without the whole organisation knowing? I have read information saying that the connectors function the same way so, why shouldn't the machines talk to each others across sites? R. Michael
1017.3 | Different Schemas | FLASK2::SYSTEM | Nigel Bridport @REO | Fri Apr 25 1997 09:41 | 14 |
Hi Michael, >I have read information saying that the connectors function the same way so, >why shouldn't the machines talk to each others accross sites? Yes, the connectors set as gateways in effect, should most definately work without errors. My concerns would be when using the X.400 connector for example, as a site connector to replicate information between sites. In Exchange V5.0, the Schema used is different from V4.0. The Schema is the process that defines how objects are stored and this is meant to be the X.500 like part of Exchange. I don't know if this would work correctly. Nigel. |
