1009.0. "Inbox Assistant vs. Internet Junk Mail" by VMSNET::DEFIANT::s_vore (Smile, Mickey's watching! [email protected]) Thu Apr 17 1997 16:56

Internet Junk Mail... the scourge of today's technology.
How are you dealing with it?

I tried using the Inbox Assistant to filter, but though it
takes what appears to be a wildcard:

	when a message arrives that meets the following:
	From...[*@savetrees.com    ]

	Perform these actions:
	[ ] alert
	[ ] delete
	[X] Move to Folder [Junk Mail ]
	[ ] copy to
	...

This rule didn't fire on mail I received this morning:

	from: [email protected]

Other ideas, suggestions, etc?

-Steven

    	When you say it "takes a wildcard", do you mean that it says that
    	wildcards can be used ... or just that it lets you type "*" in the
    	"From" field?

    	If wildcards don't work, it might consider the "*" to be just an-
    	other character in the username.

1009.2Drop the asterisk and try againSMURF::PBECKWho put the bop in the hale-de-bop-de-bop?Thu Apr 17 1997 17:385
    I think that's right. Try specifying the filter as @savetrees.com
    without the asterisk. I don't use an Exchange client, but with
    Eudora Pro's filtering, I can specify 'pbeck' in the from filter
    without any other syntax and it matches any mail I've sent from any
    source. Generally, the filters are substring matches.

well, it took the "*" character, which I didn't even think it would :-)

I'll give this a shot. I didn't guess that it was substrings. The
Help isn't very helpful here.

Is there a way to import someone else's SPAM rules from their
Exchange client into mine, to save re-inventing the wheel!

    Do you consider all mail from usa.net to be junk mail?

    I ask because I have just started using usa.net as my email forwarding
    service and they explicitly state that they do not condone spam mail
    from their domain! They even offer advise on what to do if you receive
    junk email on their server!

	If you are using Outlook and the Rules Wizard from
	www.microsoft.com/outlook , you can export and import
	your rules.

re: the wizard

I found it clunky to use, but it does do an import/export and
you can disable it and go back to the "non-wizard" interface
if you prefer.

re: usa.net

sorry if I end up including domains in my anti-spam rules that
real folks use; the ones I listed have been ones from which I've
received spam but not "real" mail (I don't filter out aol.com,
for example, because I've gotten plenty of legitimate mail from
there along with the junk).

1009.11Why doesn't it assist??WOTVAX::HILTONSave Water, drink beerFri May 16 1997 16:0214
    My inbox assistant isn't coping with spam, I have it set as:

    FROM: @i-machine.com; @succeed.vipro.com; @02368.com; @savetree.com;
    @savetrees.com; @strutyourstuff.com; @iceland.it.earthlink.net;
    @rader.catch22.com; @juno.com; @bigfoot.com; @mlr4lsndr.com

    But I've received mail today from [email protected], NS
    [email protected] which wasn't auto moved to my SPAM folder.

    Anyone know why??

take out the "@" sign.

Sometimes mine seems to not process messages, randomly. Of 5
messages from a particular address, 3 or 4 might get deleted
automatically but 1 or 2 still make it into my inbox. *sigh*

1009.13Spam mail from inside DEC - apparently!!WOTVAX::rasmodem13.reo.dec.com::hiltong[email protected]Sun May 18 1997 17:356
Took out the @ but it still didn't work, where have you put your
addresses, which part of the rule?

Also got spam mail apparently from vbemdf.vbde.dec.com!!

PMDF (vbemdf.vbe.dec.com is one of the PMDF gateways) will
insert the local postmaster address into the From field if
that field is empty (or invalid), since MR won't allow
an empty field.
1009.15Inbox assistant doesn't workWOTVAX::model60.lzo.dec.com::hiltong[email protected]Mon Jun 02 1997 12:175
I'm still having problems with the inbox assistance not working. Is
this a 'known' bug? It seems to sometimes work on SPAM addresses, and
sometimes not.

I've only been using Inbox Assistant to file messages to
mailing lists (so filing based on the To field). What I
found was that Exchange seemed to be only parsing the
Display name, not the actual Internet address. So, e.g.
if people sent mail to "[email protected]", it would
be refiled automatically. If they'd set up a nickname,
e.g. "Info-PMDF" <[email protected]>, the rule wouldn't
catch it.

Could that be the cause of some failures to junk spam mail?

Today, I got what I'd call junk mail and it's from:
	Display Name: 	L. East
	E-Mail address:	[email protected]

I'm not at all sure this would have been caught if I'd had
earthfriends.com in my Inbox Assistant rule.
