Are there any hints as to what it is?
It's so helpful when people indicate the file type in the subject,
but more often than not it's not the case.
If you get stuck, send it to me and I'll take a look at it.

You could also do this.
Instead of running Explorer, start File Manager. The path should
look something like this:
C:\WINNT\system32\winfile.exe
And then use File Manager to look at the directory/file, and you
should be able to see a file extension that will tell you what kind
of file it is.

984.3 | VMS Foreign File | TNPUBS::MACDONALD | | Tue Apr 08 1997 17:43 | 2 |
| Sounds like someone on VMS sent you a file using SEND/FOREIGN. I don't
believe you can recover it through exchange. Anyone know more?

I don't think SEND/FOREIGN will make it through the firewall, but
I've never tried SMTP% ... only USnRMC::

SMTP gives me a "record too large" error on the file I tried.
USnRMC can't handle the /FOREIGN qualifier.

VMS Send/for only works between 2 VMS systems running DECnet.
It's NOT the same as sending attachments. See the VMSmail
notesfile on VMSZOO:: for more on this never-ending rathole.

984.7 | check headers | PARZVL::ogodhcp-123-40-88.ogo.dec.com::kennedy | nuncam non paratus | Wed Apr 09 1997 17:10 | 29 |
| You may get a clue about the type of document if you look at
the message properties (File -> Properties). Then click on
the Headers tab.
In the headers, you should see some entries like this:
Content-type: MULTIPART/MIXED; BOUNDARY="Boundary (ID
C8IRZwdl1A3X5oZWSk+HVg)"
Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT
--Boundary (ID C8IRZwdl1A3X5oZWSk+HVg)
Content-type: text/plain
^^^^^^^^^^ - indicates a text bodypart
--Boundary (ID C8IRZwdl1A3X5oZWSk+HVg)
Content-type: MESSAGE/RFC822
Content-disposition: attachment; filename="<attachment>"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
this syntax more usually includes something like
filename.extension (and the extension often indicates
what type of document it is)
Was this a message from the Internet? Or from an
ALL-IN-1 user? If the latter, it may be that they attached
a document type not recognized by our PMDF gateways, which
do the mapping between MR document types and the MIME types
which Exchange understands.
If you still need help, please post the information from the
Headers tab here.
