I'm having a problem similar to Note 688, except that was an NT client and I'm trying to use W95 from home. The error is "The set of folders could not be opened. The Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not available. Either there are network problems or the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is down for maintenance." I'm dialing into LEXRAS with my digital1 acct so my password is OK. If I re-enter my server name and mailbox name in my Exchange profile and Check Names it is verified OK. Therefore the server is up, my profile is correct, and my password is valid. I've been talking with CCS for three days. I've deleted all my .PWL files, I've deleted my Exchange profile, I've re-installed the Exchange client on my system. CCS tells me that LEXEXC1 is fine so the problem must be on my end. I also went into the office and was able to connect to LEXEXC1 from an NT system and read my mail. Does anyone have any ideas or know any magic incantations? Or is it time to offer another human sacrifice to the gods?

982.1 | corrupted registry? | LEXSS1::PUCHRIK | Field Rat | Mon Apr 07 1997 07:30 | 3 |
More on .0. I restored a saved registry using CleanSweep. I get the same error msg when trying to run Exchange. Everything else runs OK. Looks like I'll have to rebuild.
982.2 | sounds like a WINS problem | PARZVL::ogodhcp-125-128-137.ogo.dec.com::kennedy | nuncam non paratus | Mon Apr 07 1997 16:35 | 18 |
wait - don't rebuild that computer yet. Note that the error you get does not suggest a password/authentication problem. It suggests that you're unable to locate the Exchange server. That sounds more like a WINS problem. First review the RAS configuration instructions at http://www-ccs.wro.dec.com/nt/RemoteAccess/W95Client.htm I can't easily check now, but it may be that you'll still need to configure your dial-up adapter with the addresses of WINS (Windows Internet Name Service) servers, also. Check the list at http://www-ccs.wro.dec.com/nt/NetworkServices.html to find the appropriate server.
982.3 | WINS comes from LEXRAS | LEXSS1::PUCHRIK | Field Rat | Mon Apr 07 1997 21:14 | 13 |
I appreciate the thought. I've added LEXEXC1 to my HOSTS file. I believe that when I can do a CHECK NAME from my profile (using LEXEXC1 and my mailbox, Andy Puchrik), getting a confirmation means that the server is up and that my digital1 password is correct. If it was NT you could specifically add RPC. Since it's W95 I don't have that option. I did check my Exchange Provider key in the Registry and I have the (improved): ncacn_ip_tcp,ncalrpc,ncacn_spx,ncacn_np,netbios,ncacn_vns_spp I can hold off a day or so on the rebuild, but I really think it's inevitable. Kind of like Spring cleaning.
982.4 | for the record | LEXSS1::PUCHRIK | Field Rat | Wed Apr 09 1997 16:15 | 3 |
Re-formatted the partition and re-installed W95. Exchange is now working for me. |
