942.0. "How can I recover my backed-up Exchange mail?" by TUXEDO::STRUTT (Colin Strutt) Wed Mar 19 1997 15:51

I have a problem trying to restore an NT backup of an Exchange
    Information Store.

I did a full backup of Exchange (using NT backup). Exchange was
re-installed, but with new "parameters" (such as the organization name
    and the org unit name).

I have been using this "new" installation (so I have some mail there).
I did a full backup of this configuration.

Now I try and restore the previous (original) full backup - the backup
restore appears to succeed (it copies ~70Mb of stuff). But then the
information store will no longer start. It gives an error 1105 (without
    any further explanation).

I restore the most recent backup, and I have my new mail, but my
previous (significant quantity of) stored mail is not available.

Any idea how I may recover all my old mail in this situation?

942.1I'm not optimistic about this onetunsrv2-tunnel.imc.das.dec.com::fosterStan Foster - [email protected]Thu Mar 20 1997 03:3914
I dont think this will work. You are essentially trying to change the
identity of the server by restoring a backup into a server that is
now part of a different organisation. This wont work because all the
directory objects have identifiers that tie them to an organisation
if not to a server/site/nt-domain. So its like doing a heart
transplant using an organ with the wrong blood type, and the patient
is rejecting it.

You may have to go back to the old configuration, re-restore the
backup, save the mailbox(es) off to pst's and then rebuild the server
into its new home before moving the pst's back into their (new)
mailboxes.

    Hi Colin,

You can find a nice Microsoft Disaster Recovery Document in winword6
format on the Planet Exchange Web site.

    http://messaging.vbe.dec.com/exchange/

The doc is quite large (about 990KB) so it will take some time to
download it. Its an update to the Microsoft Exchange Backup/Restore
    supplemental procedures document.

    Regards,

    Gary
