913.0. "Hardware spec for test system" by IOSG::BILSBOROUGH (SWBFS) Mon Mar 03 1997 17:26

    Hi,

I'm a Quality Assurance engineer and we would like to setup an Exchange
Server system to carry out testing.

I have a 100mhz Pentium with 32mb memory. I was thinking of adding an
extra 1gb disk and say another 16/24 mb memory. We won't really be
exercising Exchange at all just using it a little so we're not too
worried about performance. Basically testing will be around stopping
the MTA etc. No one will be using it for real as their mail
file cabinet. We would expect to have all the components of Exchange
    installed and running.

Will this system die on it's knees or will it live?

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Exchange really requires 64Mb memory to run efficiently. You
would get some benefit from adding a little extra to your 32Mb
    	system.

You don't really say how much disk space you have ? In the real
world, Exchange is split over a number of disks. Also, are you
intending to run any other products on the system apart from NT
    	and Exchange.

    Nige.

I'll be using it as my PC but most of the time I expect Exchange won't
be running. We're developing Mailbus Monitor for NT which will monitor
Exchange. So it'll be a case of me wanting to test something, starting
up Mailbus Monitor, starting up Exchange and carrying out some tests.

I have just a 2Gb disk at the moment but I dual boot so there isn't
that much space on the NT side. I was hoping to just put Exchange on
the one new disk, do you think that I need to spread it a little so that it
    won't die?

    Thanks,
    Mike

It is normally best to spread Exchange for performance reasons but
I have been successfully running Exchange V4.0 on a single disk.

Nige.

Well the 64mb and the extra 2gb is in.
I'll next upgrade from NT V4.0 to NT v4.0 Service pack 2 and go from there.

I'll report back here for others future reference.

Just an update. Exchange v5.0 is installed and working fine. I've
even got it working with MB400 in just one day. Wow I must be
    learning.
