| Re .0, what does it say when you entered the command SHOW FORWARD
having entered the SET FORWARD command? My guess is DCL dropped your
single `"' double-quotes. Your SET command should have been
MAIL>set forward xxxxxx::""[email protected]""
--svb

| Frank,
you may also need to put an "@internet" or "@exchange" on the end, just in
case your local MRGATE doesn't automatically detect an internet address.

897.3 | Use SMTP% if you have UCX on your VMS machine | GALVIA::JFEGAN | Joe Fegan@ilo | Fri Feb 21 1997 10:57 | 18 |
| Alternatively, if your VMS system is running UCX you could use SMTP to
forward the mail to Exchange. That's what I've done and I've found it
to be much quicker than going through MRGATE.
MAIL> show forw
Your mail is being forwarded to SMTP%"[email protected]".
As mentioned in .1, when you set the forwarding address you have to put
in more than one set of double quotes to stop DCL removing them. I had
to put in three sets to set mine properly:
MAIL> set forw smtp%"""[email protected]"""
Be sure to check that the address is set properly by doing SHOW FORWARD
afterwards.
Joe.

897.5 | VMSmail forwards don't usually use @INTERNET | PARZVL::16.123.40.132::kennedy | nuncam non paratus | Fri Feb 21 1997 17:36 | 4 |
| Re: previous which suggested adding "@INTERNET" or "@EXCHANGE"
this is used when sending/forwarding from ALL-IN-1, not
when forwarding VMSmail through a Mail-11 to SMTP gateway
(I assume the XXXXXX:: actually was an RMC)

| Sorry if i caused any confusion, i was assuming that XXXXXX:: was the
local MRGATE node, thus into Message Router (old ALL-IN-1 habits die hard)!

897.7 | How can I reply to forwarded VMSmail? | WHYNOW::NEWMAN | Protector of the Cause | Wed Apr 16 1997 02:27 | 15 |
| I have noticed a problem attempting to forward my VMSmail to EXCHANGE.
Assume I have my VMSmail forwarded to EXCHANGE...
If the sender of the message to my VMSmail account does not have their
personal name set in VMSmail the message gets forwarded just fine and I
can REPLY to it from EXCHANGE.
If, however, the sender of the message to my VMSmail account does have
their personal name in VMSmail set to some character string, the
message gets forwarded without any probme BUT I cannot reply to it.
If I attempt to REPLY to the message, the "TO" address that EXCHANGE
sticks in is the value of their PERSONAL NAME field.
Is there any way to fix this?

| Re: replying to VMSmail forwarded from someone with a Personal
name set.
Did you try to send the reply? Understand that Exchange
will show you a personal name (or display name, or friendly
name) if one exists - that does not mean that it's showing
you the actual address for that name. If there is no
personal name, then there's nothing to show except the address
(in fact, Exchange creates a disply name equivalent to the
address). If you double click on the name in the To field
(or select, then MB2 - Properties), you can see both
the display name & E-Mail address fields - it's the E-Mail
address which is actually used for message delivery.
I just tested this, with a VMSmail account forwarded via
an RMC. Replies to messages containing a personal name
worked fine. If you really can't reply, please let us
know how you are forwarding the mail.

897.10 | It works | WHYNOW::NEWMAN | Protector of the Cause | Wed Apr 16 1997 21:08 | 7 |
| Well what do you know... It actually works!
I had based my earlier opinion purely on what the TO address field
said. But when I actually tried it, it worked!
Thanks

897.11 | Replies to autoforward still broken for me | EPS::LOVELUCK | | Mon May 12 1997 17:09 | 26 |
| I have set my autoforward with the format:
smtp%"[email protected]"
and mail arrives fine, but the return address is wron unless the mail
originated on the same node as my vms account, and I can't reply.
Replies are generated to
"name::originatingnode"@eps.zko.dec.com
where eps is the node of my VMS mail account.
This doesn't work. Looking at that address, I'm not surprised it
doesn't work, because there is nothing to tell EPS:: how to treat the
part in quotes. Are there any SMTP gateway definitions that need to be
set up on EPS::.

897.12 | why keep the vmsmail in the middle? | PARZVL::ogodhcp-125-128-96.ogo.dec.com::kennedy | nuncam non paratus | Mon May 12 1997 20:02 | 5 |
| Are you speaking of SMTP mail which was sent
to you at node.enet.dec.com? Or even node.site.dec.com?
Perhaps you'd do better to reply directly (and start
cutting out the VMS node altogether).
