893.1 | You want Redirection, not auto-forward | ZUR01::ASHG | Grahame Ash @RLE | Thu Feb 20 1997 08:27 | 11 |
| Sorry I can't answer your question, but this might lead to a solution.
Auto-forward is working correctly i.e. it works automatically in exactly the
same way as a manual auto-forward from your Exchange account would have done.
What you really want is Redirection, where your Exchange address on the
original message is replaced by your VMSmail address. One way of achieving
this used to be by getting MTS to route the messages to where you want them -
I don't know what the CCS mechanism for Exchange is.

Well...if CCS weren't so "arrogant" they would implement "Custom Recepients"
and all mail sent to the Exchange "account" (which doesn't exist) would be
"redirected" to your account of choice.
I've ask for this to be implemented for myself and the response is that they
(CCS) doesn't want to "support" this feature of Exchange. So, I implemented
my own "Exchange Server", "connected" via an IMC to the rest of DIGITAL.

I forward mail from VIVIAN::RANCE to my exchange account using the
OpenVMS freeware tool Deliver. You need to have privileges on the
OpenVMS system to do this correctly but if you have privs then the
mail headers appear as
To: Exchange account
From: original sender
Subject: original subject ! Sent to VIVIAN::RANCE

893.5 | why is this not trivial? | GIDDAY::STRAUSS | talking through my binoculars | Sun Feb 23 1997 21:37 | 18 |
| Thanks for all the replies so far.
Just propos, I find it perplexing that it should be this complicated.
It's trivial to forward my Unix or VMS mail without losing the original
sender's address, without resorting to additional software or seeking
help from other parts of the organisation. I can just create a
.forward file, or MAIL> SET FORWARD as the case may be. And as Andy says
in .3, All-in-1 also forwards mail (_most_ of the time ;-)
It appears that Exchange can't do this easily. Instead of taking a few
seconds to type a few characters, it's become a problem.
Keep those suggestions and comments rolling in.
Thanks again

893.6 | Possible with 5.0 | VARESE::VIOTTO | | Mon Feb 24 1997 12:52 | 5 |
| With Exchange 5.0 (or 4.5, as you want to call it), in the "Edit Rule" sheet (from Inbox Assistant) you can
specify which kind of forwarding you want. If you select "Leave message intact" the original From field is
preserved.

893.8 | Oh to forward properly! | INDYX::ram | Ram Rao, PBPGINFWMY | Mon Mar 17 1997 21:31 | 8 |
| As another person who forwards their Exchange mail off to another (Unix)
system, I too long for the ability to preserve the From field in the
forwarding process. Does CCS have any plans to move to Exchange V5.0?
If so when?
Thanks,
Ram

| by "my Exchange" I presume you mean your Exchange client?
Then the answer is no. Auto-forward is a server function. You don't
need to be connected.
