I get mail messages from folks on the Internet regularly with attached files. Sometimes they appear to be fine, sometimes they show up like the one below. Is my Exchange Client setup wrong or missing something to automatically read this? Mesage from Oracle and Peoplesoft both have appeared like the attached in the past few days. Oracle is using Oracle Office, and Peoplesoft is using cc:mail. COmments? Re .1: That's exactly what it looks like to me, too; the headers are getting mangled through the gateways and confusing Exchange client. The MIME encoding itself is fine; I was able to extract .0 to a file and create the Excel spreadsheet using WinZip 6.2 as the decoder. You might want to get a stand-alone MIME decoder for messages like that one. I once had to manually decode a message for someone where it turned out that it had been routed through a set of gateways that had MIME-encoded the MIME encoding, but running it though the decoder twice still produced the original file. | |||||

The ugliness of that address shows that the path you're using to forward VMSmail is not rewriting the address correctly (did you try to reply to this at all?). How are you autoforwarding from VMSmail? However, even if you go through a machine which does the address rewriting correctly, our VMSmail gateways don't support MIME, so you may still have the problem of Exchange not getting the necessary headers. If you're an Exchange user, it makes sense to update your Internet correspondents (and any mailing lists you're on) to send directly to your Exchange address. Sending the mail through many different gateways (note that your message went through an SMTP-VMSmail gateway to your VMSmail account and then through a VMSmail-SMTP gateway to get to Exchange) only introduces delay and problems with address and bodypart translation. | |||||

Looks like the addresses they had were based on RECEIVING my previous mail messages a long time ago. They used the ...juliet.enet.dec.com address instead of either my MTS or Exchange formatted address. Since the original note, I think I've successfully gotten binary attachments when sent to me via EITHER of these last two addresses, (BUT NOT the original JULIET.ENET address.)
