836.0. "Multiple users / Guest users / One PC" by TIANT::BRZOZOWSKI (See it happen => Make it happen) Fri Jan 24 1997 13:20

How can many people use the same PC to access their Exchange mail?

Here are some real-life examples where we need this:
    	- 8 non-office-based workers need to check their mail occasionally.
They do not share an account, but would like to share a PC.
    	- A user is working in another DIGITAL facility for they day,
without a laptop, and wants to read new mail.
    	- The manager of a conference center wants to provide a guest PC for
attendees to read mail but didn't bring a laptop.

These were all very easy with terminal access.

Can this be done in our new envrironment? Where should I be looking to
learn what I need to do this?

    Thanks for any pointers!

What operating system is the client running?

Should be relatively easy. Let them log into their DIGITALx
account and create a new profile. Then they should
be able to get to their email.

    Right.

If using Windows 95, I'd recommend setting the PC to keep seperate
settings for each user (Control Panel --> Password). This keeps all
    Exchange settings/profiles user specific.

Windows NT does this by default.

As long as the user keeps their mail on the Exchange server, the
network can be used to access Exchange from anywhere. Any message
kept in personal file stores that are inaccessible to the network will
    not be available.

I believe that an NT box could be set up with the utility that
automatically creates a profile such that when a user logged into their
Digital1 account, a profile would be created that allowed them to
access their mail on the Exchange server. You probably wouldn't want
to have the user leave anything behind on the NT box, since the user
wouldn't have access to it afterwards, and the box would have lots of
    orphan files over time.

I think that something like this is going to be set up in Stow. So
we'll see if it actually works.

We're setting up NT boxes for multiple mail users who don't need a PC
all the time (in this case, Product Repair Centre folks). Send me mail
and I'll put you in touch with the folks involved ('cause I'm not sure
they'd want me to post their names!).

    re .0

One of my PCs is set up for multi-user access. Just highlight Inbox and
right click for properties. It is in here that you can set up for
    mulitple exchange users.

When changing users on the PC, just use the 4th option on the shutdown
menu titled something like close all programs and log in as another
    user.

I have implementation documentation for setting this stuff
up on Win95 at least.
