I tried to re-install the Exchange client - and it made no difference.
I suspect that the bits that Office 97 installed were later than the
client for Exchange Server, so the reinstall did not reinstall
anything.
I ended up removing Exchange, *then* reinstalling it, and it nearly
works fine.
Only problem I have seen is that when I double-click on a mail address
in Internet Explorer, I get a messagebox from Microsoft Outlook saying
(cryptically): "Can't create the item."
