| These are revised instructions:
Yes, it is possible to manage an Alpha IMC on a i386 management station. The
problem is that the management DLL needed to be downloaded to the i386 box
doesn't exist on the server.
The way that this is accomplished is to copy the Intel version of imcadmin.dll
to C:\exchsrvr\Add-ins\Smtp\i386 (you will need to create the i386 directory)
onto the Alpha Exchange server. Be sure to get the correct version. That is,
if your Alpha Exchange server is running SP2, get the SP2 version of the Intel
DLL from the SP2 CD.
Next, you must run the Admin program in raw mode (ADMIN /R) and brute-force the
directory entry for the new add-in. This is done by:
1. In the left pane, expand the Configuration container by clicking on the plus
sign to the left. Then in the left hand pane, click (highlight) on the
Add-Ins object in the Configuration container. The current set of Add-Ins will
be seen in the right hand pane. Then pull down File, New Other>, Raw Object...
2. When the "New Raw Object" dialog box appears, select Admin-Extension. A
Properties screen appears.
3. Enter the following information. IMPORTANT-> Be sure to click on Set after
each and Apply at the end.
Directory Name: SMTP:i386
Admin-Extension-DLL: imcadmin.dll
File-Version: 0000E10300000400
Note: The above value for File-Version is for Exchange Server V4.0 SP2 and SP3
only. If you have a different SP or version, you may need to enter a different
value. The value can be obtained by examining the raw properties of the
"Add-ins\Extension for Internet Mail Connector for i386" on an Intel Exchange
server with the correct version loaded.
4. The object will be named by default as SMTP:i386. Double click on it to
get the Properties screen. Change the display name to:
Extension for Internet Mail Connector for i386
5. Enjoy managing your IMC from an Intel-hosted Admin program.
