1397.0. "disk problem queries" by STAR::BENSON (Musical Weapons Research) Fri Jan 28 1994 12:44
I have a Mega2 ST and a 20 meg Supra disk. Sometimes, when I try
to start an application from the hard disk, I get a "disk may be
corrupted error", and the "working" light on the disk stays lit.
I've tried deleting the files from the hard disk, and restoring them
from floppies. I still get the error, about 70% of the time. When I
don't get the error, the programs work fine.
If I get the error, and dismiss this message box, and then try to
read a floppy, I always get a "drive is not responding" message.
So I have a couple of questions...
1. Is this problem likely to really be in the disk? The fact that
the floppy also dies makes me suspicious.
2. Any possible cures for intermittent disk problems like this?
Thanks,
Tom

try re-seating all the chips (especially the ROMs) in your computer.
It helped me some time ago...

| Hmm, maybe I'll try the chip trick too. It leaves me wondering if
maybe this is related to the Supra though. Which TOS version is in
your system? My 1040 with TOS 1.0 and a 20Mb Supra drive does this
from time to time also. I thought it might be a TOS bug corrupting
my data. It seems to happen more often when I'm using the hard drive
and almost (but not quite) never when running only off floppies.

Upgrade to *at least* TOS 1.4.
TOS 1.0 is so very buggy and slow that I'm surprised you can run a
hard disk at all.

| In my case, the disk had been working correctly w/out a problem for
at least a year, before it started these intermittent failures. So
I suspect hardware rather than software. I will try the 'reseat
everything' approach suggested earlier... Thanks,
Tom
