1395.0. "rom upgrade mega2 v.s. mega-ste" by JGO::CARECL::SYS_SMEELE () Fri Jan 14 1994 03:55

	Hi,

I recently got a MEGA2, unfortunately it speaks German.

I prefer it to speak English and would like to install a rom
version that does just that. A friend of mine is willing to
help me get TOS 2.06 roms which he uses in his MEGA-STE

Before we do the "openheart surgery" we would like
        to hear from the experts:

	The question now is :
does the mega2 use the same Rom as the (faster) STE ?
Any problems upgrading from TOS 1.4 6-chip romset to
	(256 k ?) to 2-chip romset (1-mb) except for the jumper
	setting ?

    Hello Hans,

you can *not* simply replace TOS 1.04 ROMs by TOS 2.06 ROMs without at
least some additional hardware mangling. The address space of TOS 1.04
starts at $FC0000, that od TOS 2.06 has the first address $E00000. This
is because TOS 2.06 is a whole lot longer than 1.04, and it would have
conflicted with the memory mapped registers of the I/O chips.

There are some providers of TOS 2.06 adaption cards for the Mega ST and
other TOS 1.xx computers, one of which is ARTIFEX. I don't know of the
distribution channels outside of Germany, but I can look up the german
address this weekend. Probably they will be able to help you.

    Regards,

      Peter.

PS: Did you ever think of using a different operating system on your
ST? Since about three months I'm running Mag!X; it is rather
compatible, most of my ST software runs without problems, it has
preemptive multitasking *and it's faster than TOS*
