1362.0. "Getting online mags from the Internet" by ASD::MIDIOT::POWERS (Bill Powers ZKO3-2/S11) Wed May 26 1993 08:40

I have been requested to explain how to access the online mags ST Report
Z-Net and Atari Explorer Online on the Internet. Here is how to do it.

Getting AEO from the internet is not simply straight
forward. First you need access to an Ultrix/OSF machine
or a VMS machine with UCX installed. From the ultrix/osf
prompt type

ftp gatekeeper.dec.com 1555

A bunch of text will be printed out. Followed by
another prompt of "Name gatekeeper.dec.com:<username>"
Where <username> is your username. Type

[email protected]

If the archive has all of it's connections in use
you will get a login failed message. If not, it will
prompt you for a password. At the password prompt type
your internet address. It is in the form.

<username>@<nodename>.enet.dec.com

Where <username> is your username and nodename is
your nodename.

You now have access to the atari archives. You can
use the cd command to decend the directory tree to get
at the directory where the files are stored. You can
use the ls command to see a directory or ls -c to put
the directory into columns if a regular ls scrolls of the
screen. Then use the get command to get the file you
want. For example:

cd atari/Magazines/Aeo
ls
get aeo_0210.lzh

To exit the ftp session, use the bye command at the
ftp prompt. VMS FTP with UCX uses ^Z not bye.

Hope this helps

1362.1Is E-mail access possible?ALLVAX::PETERSDon Peters, TAY1-1/D7, 227-3173Wed May 26 1993 10:124
As I understand it, the server at umich also can take E-mail requests for
its archived software. If we could get these on-line magazines with a
simple E-mail request, that would be less time consuming. Has anyone looked
into this?

I used to use the E-mail system to get files from the archive. But
didn't like it because if there were any problems you had no indication
of what went wrong. The Email system also seemed to be flakey for
quite a while. But theoretically all you have to do to get a file
is send a message to decwrl::"[email protected]" and in
the text put:

get Magazines/Aeo/aeo_0210.lzh

or whatever the path to the file you want is. They also had a daily
quota of 400k. Not conducive to getting the GNU software.
