1357.2 | 'Atari ST Review' magazine closes down... | FAILTE::ROBSONB | | Tue Dec 13 1994 19:23 | 14 |

'Atari ST Review' magazine has closed down, and the last issue
will be the one following December 1994.
The magazine has been bought by a company called Pearsons, who publish
'ST Format', which many would describe as being 'ST Reviews 'rival'
magazine.
Pearsons have bought 'Atari ST Review' and closed it down, leaving
'ST Format' as the only currently available UK 'ST' magazine, and
it is presently apparantly unknown whether 'ST Format' will incorporate
any of 'ST Review's attributes.

1357.3 | total and utter dismay - RIP ST REVIEW | KERNEL::BLAND | Norman Bland 833 3797 CSC, Basingstoke | Mon Dec 19 1994 05:21 | 9 |
| Brian, I have been following this development on CIX and I dismayed
that the only professional ST magazine in UK (IMHO) is going. My
understanding was that it was going to be absorbed by ST FORMAT but
from what you say we may not see any of its attributes again. I decided
some time ago that I would not buy ST FORMAT again - I will have to
keep my options open; if it does become a more professional magazine,
then I might just start to buy it again.

RIP Atari St Review.
According to the latest editions of both Review & Format, the ST Format
due for publication on January the 10th will "Incorporate both
magazines".
As Norman said in .-1 it will be sad to see the only serious ST
magazine go. To me, the ST Format "rag" has only really been games
biased.
It does not look like any Review staff will be going to the new
magazine. Vic (editor) has indicated that he is moving to London, to
work on a MAC publication. Don't know about any other personnel, as
yet.
I guess it's down to W H Smith to review the combined item before
buying it.

1357.5 | ST Format a 'rag'??? | COMICS::DAWSONJ | It's...... | Wed Jan 04 1995 08:02 | 18 |

>the ST Format "rag" has only really been games biased.
I have been buying ST Format for a long time now, in fact when I
started buying it ST Action was just starting (now _there_ was a
games-biased magazine), ST Review was a relatively young magazine
and had published far fewer issues that ST Format.
I have a few issues of ST Review, but usually that was because
they had particular package on the 2nd cover disk. I always felt
it wasn't up to the same standard as ST Format, and didn't have the
bredth of the latter.
Also ST User is still around, I saw a recent issue floating around
on Smith's shelves.

re .5
There will always be a difference of opinion (that's healthy) but for
me the STR mag was the best. There was a time when I subscibed to STF &
STU; eventually I gave up STU because of its contents (or lack of). At
that time I thought that STF was great (mainly because they had two
cover disks which included some useful packages). I recently purchased
STF Jan' 95,my comments are:
One useful program - Route Finder (restricted version)
Content (articles) mediocre (nothing of great interest)
You can't please everyone all of the time :>)
I'll wait with interest to see it it is worth buying STF on a regular
basis again.

1357.7 | 'ST Format' has new editor... | FAILTE::ROBSONB | | Wed Jan 04 1995 20:12 | 23 |

I subscribed to 'ST FORMAT' quite a while ago, when ST Review
was a new magazine and remember that at that time ST Format was
really good IMHO - I liked the humour it incorporated into the
editorial style, and as far as I can remember the articles and
reviews were interesting and informative, but then for some reason
or other, coincidentally round about the same time as a new editor
took over, it became less attractive to me.
As I understand it, 'ST Format' is to have another new editor -
perhaps the magazine will change as a result.
Another magazine which I thought was really good is 'ST Applications'.
This is a 'subscription only' mag which does not have glossy pages
or colour layout, but contains quite lengthy and detailed articles
and reviews in what many would describe as being of a 'serious' nature.
A few months ago, 'ST Applications' was cut down in size and reduced
in price, the reasoning behind this being that 'ST Applications' would
concentrate it's efforts on being 'supplemental' to 'ST Review', but
since 'ST Review' is no longer in existance, my understanding is that
'ST Applications' is reviewing it's position and may revert back to
it's former format, depending on how 'ST Format' develops.

1357.8 | Feb STF - nothing to interest me | KERNEL::BLAND | Norman Bland 833 3797 CSC, Basingstoke | Wed Jan 25 1995 15:14 | 7 |
| OK, I purchased the Feb issue of STF last Saturday. I have had a good
look at the content twice and scan whats on the cover disk. For *ME*
there is absolutely nothing of any real interest. I will not say I will
never buy it again (I said that once before :-) ). It will have to
improve considerably before I would purchase it regularly.
