1340.0. "Adding a tape drive to your 1040ST" by SVCRUS::ADAMS (Bob Adams "Beam me up Scotty") Fri Dec 11 1992 21:24

I recently had a good experience connecting a tape drive to my 1040st.
I thought that I would pass it on to others. I already owned an ICD
advantage SCSI controller so I thought that SCSI would be the way to
go. I went to the last computer show (flea market) in marlboro.
Even though they are mostly pc's I still go to pick up odds and ends.
Usually I buy all of my disks there. But this time I saw a 150meg drive
for $160.00 not bad I thought why not try it. The only other thing I
needed was the software. This I got from Beckmyer Development. The
current price is $49.00 which includes all of the drivers and backup
software. I addressed the drive as unit #4 and plugged it in. It worked
perfectly. I could backup, restore or scan a tape. Operation was all
controlled by drop down menus, quick and easy. The only improvement
that I would like to see in the software would be the addition of
incremental backups and possibly multiple savesets on the tapes.
Mabey they are working on that already (I hope). Anyway if you are
looking for a good way to backup your hard drive this is it, no more
swapping disks, just plug in a tape and go watch tv.

    bye for now...Bob

    Bob,

How 'bout a little more info on that - such as (obviously
I don't know about Beckmeyer) the software... is it Atari code
intended for tape drives? How hard is it to find these types
of tape drives? Where should I look - Computer Shoper? I have
a BMS scsi controller for my seagate - think it might work?

    					Any & all thoughts welcomed,

yes, also very interested in that piece of software. Where to get it
(in Europe, Germany) and what options and features it has.

Bob, what is the name of that software from Beckmyer Development?
Is there any shop in Colorado Springs or Maynard where I can get
it (have the chance to be there in January).

    Tnx

1340.4More on Beckemeyer and Tape installationSVCRUS::ADAMSBob Adams "Beam me up Scotty"Mon Dec 21 1992 18:4127
The software came from a place in California. You can call them
	I have the number.

		Beckemeyer Development
		PO Box 21575
		Oakland, CA 94620
		(510) 530-9637

The software uses a nice GEM interface. It is simple to use but
that also means not to many features. It will backup and restore
individual files but it won't do incrementals. At least I haven't
figured out how to get it to do them. It uses drop down menus.
There are two programs, one for backup and one for restore. You
can also scan a tape to see what is on it.
As far as I can tell it will work with any standard SCSI tape drive.
	I have tried it with a Tanberg 6610 150mb drive and a Cipher 320mb
drive. Both worked just fine. The software seems to be set up to only
work with SCSI ID 4. At least that is the only address that I could get
to work and I didn't see any way to change it via menus.

I don't know if it will work with the BMS adapter. I have the ICD
which boasts "true" SCSI, whatever that means. All I did was get a
50 pin SCSI cable and plug it into the ICD adapter along with my
hard drive. It was really that easy.

Have to go now. Enjoy the Holidays...Bob
