1313.0. "Problems with ICD software" by YNGSTR::WALLACE () Mon Sep 28 1992 17:52
Does anyone here run ICD V5.6 software or know of any problems with it?
I tried upgrading my ICD boot software to V5.6 recently (was V3.??) but ran
into the following problem. When the system boots I can access the first drive
(LUN 0, I have two drives hanging off an Adaptek board, with one ICD adapter),
but I can't access the second drive (LUN 1) unless I 'rescan' the drives using
the hdutil program. Once I rescan and get the drive accesible, if I reset the
system it reverts to the bad behaviour of not being able to access the second
drive.
Needless to say, I am back to using the V3.?? version of the boot program.
Has anyone been able to get V5.6 working? If so did you reformat your drives
or just install the new boot program? Did you have to do anything else to get
it to work?
Does anyone have a newer version of the ICD software?
Thanks,
Ray

| I have to take a look at my box at home, but I believe that my version
is 6.0. I will tell you tomorrow.
Maybe you can also get in touch with ICD.

1313.2 | From 3.X to 5.4.2 | SVCRUS::ADAMS | Bob Adams "Beam me up Scotty" | Thu Oct 01 1992 22:23 | 30 |

I have version 5.4.2 running now. I upgraded from 3.X. I also
installed tos rom chips to go to 1.4 at the same time. This was
done to take advantage of the larger partition sizes available.
Initially everything came up ok. I have two hard drives and I
copied all of my files from drive 0 to drive 1 then did a reformat
on 0 and increased the partition size. I then copied all my files
back from 1 to 0 and formatted drive 1 and gave it 32 meg partitions.
All this without any problems at all. But (there always is one)
I was originally using a BMS200 scsi interface and I bought an
ADSCSI interface from ICD so that I could get the upgraded disk
software BUT I placed the ADSCSI adapter onto the DMA bus without
taking the BMS200 off or disconnecting any cables from it. The
software just wanted to see the ADSCSI adapter to verify that
one was there. That done it actually used my BMS200 adapter to
access the drives. I don't know if that had anything to do with
mine working and yours not but I thought it was interesting that
nothing complained about having two SCSI adapters on the system.
I used it like that for about 18 months without any trouble.
Just recently I have removed the BMS200 because I could not get
it to handle true SCSI disks. The ICD adapter does it just fine.
One curious thing about the BMS200 was that it could drive the
SCSI bus for 15 feet so that even with my short DMA cable (3ft)
I could still have my hard drives across the room. The ICD adapter
just can't hack it. The drivers just aren't powerful enough I guess.
I think that a call to ICD may be your best bet. Or just reformat.
