1308.0. "ST Format issue 39 - October 1992" by VIVIAN::T_SMITH () Mon Sep 07 1992 05:31

The cover disk from ST Format magazine issue 39 - October 1992 has the Ghost
virus in the boot sector.

I checked it with UVK5.4, and a couple of PD virus checkers.

It may only be a small number of copies, but I wouldn't boot off if I was you -
at least not until you've killed it.

So much for all the checking that's supposed to go on.

Tony

PS it's the 'proper' cover disk I'm talking about - not the MIDI disk.

Re base note: I can confirm that UKV5.4 has found the Ghost Virus on ST
    FORMAT Cover Disk for OCT'92.

Re reply .1: I get my ST FORMAT magazine by post. The magazine always
comes out the month prior to the cover month; normally in the second
    week.

1308.4"Dear Subscriber...."NIBLIK::ROBSONTue Sep 15 1992 10:1915
I too subscribe to ST Format and yesterday I arrived home to find
in the post a jiffy bag containing a disk and a letter from ST Format.
The letter began "Dear Subscriber" and went on to explain that they
had discovered that cover disk 39 (the one with "Dynamo" and "Magic
Storybook") had been duplicated with the Ghost Virus, and although
this "would not damage the machine", the mouse pointer would be "turned
upside down", and that the virus would transfer to subsequent disks.
The enclosed disk contained a "special" demo version of UVK5, with
instructions on how to eradicate the virus from the cover disk.
The letter went on to say that the publishers have taken steps
to ensure "this never happens again".
Seems ST Format are taking this very seriously.

    RE .4

You were lucky. I received my letter/disk this morning. It has a
readable directory and a readable text file. The text file talks about
what we have on on OCT'92's "WHAT MICRO?" cover disk. It also has a
number of *.ZIP files which I understand to be PC type compressed
files. Fortunately I do not need the DEMO of UKV as I have the real
    thing.

I don't subscribe to the mag' but I notice that this issue has yet to hit
the news stands - how much is this costing them in lost revenue?

Also, I believe their mag' is from where I have TWICE been infected with
the Ghost Virus!

1308.10FIX first then DistributeKERNEL::BLANDNorman Bland 833 3797 CSC, BasingstokeThu Sep 17 1992 09:269
I have contact ST FORMAT (Future Publishing) and they tell me that only
those people who received the magazine by post will have the virus
    affected cover disk.

They recalled/stopped those magazines being distributed to shops to get
the issue fixed first. This may account for the late/none arrival of
ST FORMAT OCT'92 issue in the shops.

At least they're taking a responsible attitude. They have always made a
point in the past that their virus checking of the cover disk is
extensive, and make mileage out of the fact that their rival ST user
once distributed a virus on its cover disk (and that one DID hit the
    stands).

I've got a "Shop bought" version of STF 39 October Issue, bought on
    17th September.

I'll run UVK on it, just in case, and post the result.

Well my shop bought copy had no Viri on it, so it looks as if all is
    clear.

However I thought seeing as I had by Virus Checker out I'd just check a
few disks & found I picked up the SIGNUM virus a few months back.
Anybody any idea what this does ?

UVK found no problems on the STF 39 October disk, so it looks like,
as in previous replies, it was only the subscriber issues that got
    bugged.
