1281.0. "Dave Smalls SST030 accelerator" by BERN01::RUGGIERO (Markus Ruggiero from Switzerland) Tue Apr 28 1992 03:41
Daves Small's SST030 accellerator board.
After more than a year (order placed Feb 28th, 1991) the SST finally
has arrived. It is now installed in my MegaST4 and is working fine.
The config is 33MHz, '882, 4MB fast RAM, MegaST4 with SCSI hostadaptor,
DEC rz23 disk, SQ555 drive, two floppy drives, all together built into
a pc tower cabinet with cooling fan and a big power supply.
I did not do extensive testing with lots of different software. For me
SpectreGCR is the most important thing. Nevertheless I did very
thorough tuning and now my system runs with 1 normal and 1 burstmode
wait state. The testprogram even did fine with 0 burstmode wait state,
but then I was not able to load programs into fast RAM.
I have problems with my 5" floppy drive (there is a selfmade HD-kit to
drive the floppies): might be timing, but this is not urgent.
The GCR does not work at all when caches are on, but Spectre does fine
with cache (have to switch off cache before working with floppies).
Apple file exchange works with cache on and reads and writes 720k
MessyDOS diskettes.
The software emulator for cp/m works with cache on and loaded into fast
RAM - Hey cp/m is almost as fast as I remember from the days when I
had my Apple ][e with Z80 card running!
Tried PC-Ditto (software): no success at all.
Sedt (and GSedt, the editor) runs in fast RAM and performs great!

Cost was $1499 including shipping and handling, Swiss customs charged
another sFr 140.- (~$90). Unfortunately the exchange rate between Swiss
Francs and $$ dropped over 20% from date of order to date of
shipping/payment. This made the cost go up. But it is still cheaper
than what it costs in Germany (2400.- Marks introductory offer, then
2700.- German Marks).
Spectre goes together well with various large screens. Matrix comes to
my mind (M110). It also uses the whole screen on the TT.
Here are some more comments:
The print is rather large (20cm by 20cm) and only fits into the MegaST.
It does however work with 520s and 1040s but you must build your own
cabinet for the mainboard.
The board looks very professional although there are some minor
manually added corrections. D. Small provides a spare socket and a
replacement 68000 (8MHz) processor. You cannot have both processors
installed at the same time. If you need the 68000 for compatibility you
have to remove the whole SST and repace the processor. As the SST has
its own ROMS on board you have to remove the original Atari ROMS. So
switching back and forth is not that simple, but can be done within a
couple of minutes.
A review in a German ST magazine compares the SST to two other 030
accelerators. According to them the SST is the fastest but causes some
compatibility problems with some software. Sorry can't tell you more,
don't have the article around).
