I'd like to get some advice or share experience on a problem I have with my ATARI 1040 STE. I bought it at Xmas ( for me, for the kids, usual story ...) and have only used it for games so far - not too much time to go any further. It seems that pretty simple games (platform-type games, car races, pacman, etc...) work fine. As soon as I use something more sophis- ticated (flight simulators), the system hangs. I purchased this ATARI 1040 STE new on 24-DEC-1991 in Nice, France. Here are some examples of what happens: * F29 : does not boot. displays 1st screen (green "did"'s), makes a few disk accesses and hangs there. Ran it on a freind's 1040STE bought in March 91 : no problem. * F16 : all training modules OK. Cannot start the 1st mission : hang. As you need to succeed one mission to go to the next, this means that no mission works. No problem on my friend's 1040STE. * Blue arrows : simulation of patrol flights. hangs when you start to do complex figures. I took it back to the shop at the week-end and tried 3 new 1040STE with the F29 flight simulator : all 3 had the same problem. The shop assistant said that ATARI were changing TOS to move progressively towards MS-DOS compatibility and that this was probably the reason why some less recent games didn't work any more on the latest systems. Needless to say I'm quite reluctant to invest in any sophisticated games or packages, which makes my system much less attractive. Any similar experience ? any advice ? Thanks for any useful inputs. Philippe.

The line about "move toward MSDOS compatiblity" is incorrect. (We have another word for it here in the U.S. that I generally wouldn't use in a public forum, if you know what I mean.) To me it sounds like your computer is broken, or the floppy disk is damaged. let me get this straight: - Your disk, friends STe, works fine. Are you sure your friends have STe and not STfm? - your disk, your STe, does not work. - your disk, stores STe, does not work. If your friends actuall have STfm rather than STe, then the TOS version theory is very likely true, that is, the program works on TOS 1.4 but not with TOS 1.6 or 1.62. It is unlikely that it works on 1.6 but not 1.62. Otherwise, it can't be explaiend, but perhaps you need to have a friend copy the disk for you, and it's coincidence that the disk works on their drives but not on new drives. | |||||
1265.2 | Take an older Version of TOS | RTOEU::RPUCHNER | Here I am... | Thu Mar 12 1992 03:14 | 13 |
I think, the answer is you need an older TOS-Version. Ask your friends for an older bootable TOS-Version like 1.4 or 1.0 (call ATARI for information if you can't get an older version) Then first you boot your system with the old TOS-Version and starts the programm again, I think the problems will be fixed!
