I just received TOS 2.06 in the mail from codehead technologies. I didn't need the TEC board, as I have a STe. I attemted to put the chips in last night with no luck. The documentation which covers installation on the STe from Codehead is less than a page long. I opened up the machine but could not get the RFI shield off. The only part of the motherboard I could get at was what is under the floppy drive. Fortunately the ROM sockets were under there. However, the ROMS which were in the sockets were only 28 pin dips, and the new roms were 32 pin dips. The sockets were big enough to hold the 32 pin chips, so I installed them and of course it didn't work. Now they mention on that sheet of paper that there are some jumpers on the motherboard that have to be set in a certain order, but that they should already be set that way. Could one of the jumpers be to tell the system to use 32 pin chips as opposed to 28 pin ones? The jumpers were not visable, so they must be somewhere else on the motherboard. Does anyone know where abouts they might be (Under the power supply?) I tried real hard to get the power supp out, but could not get it. I did manage to cut myself good, and bleed all over the RFI shield trying to get it out. Does anyone have any tricks to getting the power supp out? thanks bill powers

1262.1 | You have to have it apart before you can take it apart | PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ | Jeffrey A. Lomicka | Tue Mar 10 1992 11:09 | 18 |
I did once successfully disassemble an STe entirely. I was actually just curious as to what was inside. It's not easy, as you have to remove the extra shielding that is around the connectors in the back. To do that, you have to first remove the FCC shielded PC board sandwitch entirely from the plastic housing, which involves unscrewing the PC board from the bottom plastic tray. The screws for this are, of course, INSIDE the FCC shield. To get around this catch-22, there are access holes for you to use to remove the screws. In your case, there won't actually be jumpers, but solder tabs of some kind to indicate what kind of ROMs are installed. It might involve cutting an etch between two "obvious" pads and replacing with a solder blob between two other pads. At this point, I wouldn't know what to do without getting in there myself. The instructions didn't mention this? | |||||
1262.2 | makes some sense | MIDIOT::POWERS | Bill Powers (Or a Facsimili thereof) | Tue Mar 10 1992 12:14 | 16 |
Jeff, Your description makes some sense, as it did look to me like I was in some catch 22 on getting the shielding off. The directions did not have much to say about the STe. They just had 1 page with the first half telling you that you have a super new TOS the manual doesn't have anything on the STe in it. The manual is all about installing the TEC board in older ST's. If I decide to take the "bloody" thing apart again, I'll look for some solder pads with etch between them. The one sheet of documentation had a small list of which socket got which rom chip, and which jumpers to have set. They did not mention anything about the jumpers being solder pads though. Another thing which has me worried, is, I think I read in one of the usenet posts on the upgrade, that codeheads list of which rom chip goes into which socket is wrong. Perhaps I should call codehead. bill powers |
