1232.0. "Strategy Games note" by JOCKEY::BUCKG (don't let THEM grind you down) Mon Jan 13 1992 10:07

I am on the warpath to find a good absorbing strategy game. I have
done some of the old favorites, namely Elite, Dungeon Master, Captive etc.
I get very bored very quickly with shootem-ups.

Does anyone know where I can get Empire for the ST, It is no longer
available from dealers. Or any other good strategy game?

	What is your favorite?

	any suggestions welcome.

KNIGHTMARE is very similar to Dungeon Master and Captive, and is written
by the same person who wrote Captive.

There are four Quests in the game and I am on quest 3.
The game starts in a forest where you can kill rabbits to collect
food (rabbit pies) before you enter 1 of four quests.

You can travel in a train,or in a boat(and be attacked by sharks(as
    well as walking.

There are some very good puzzles,The sound is stereo on an ste and
    the graphics are excellent.

I almost bought Railroad Tycoon last weekend, but one concern I had was
that I have heard about some problems with the Atari ST port. One of
the problems had to do with the hard disk installation, as I recall; I
don't remember what the other one was. Has anyone encountered any of
these problems, and if so, how did they get around them?

1232.4Works for me...UPROAR::IME311::greGwyn Evans @ IME - Open DECtradeTue Jan 14 1992 12:4118
I've got it, and run it from my hard disk but now you mention it, there
*might* have been a minor problem with the install onto HD.

I think that, if there was, it would have been the sort of thing where the
program doesn't copy the files to the HD correctly but worked when I copied
them from the desktop, as it hasn't really stuck in my mind.

The game 'protection' is in the form of needing to identify a make of train
from the manual rather than protecting the disk/files, btw.

I haven't really played it too hard, but haven't come across any
other problems, that I can remember. (Other than the fact that I havn't
got a big
enough screen to do it justice. :-)

Does Lemmings count as a strategy game? Even if it doesn't, I'd recommend it!

Ah, I found it! The December '91 issue of Atari User contains a review
of Railroad Tycoon. The review praises the game, but complains about
the bugs in the ST conversion. Here is a section of the review:

Now the bugs. The hard drive installation program was not written
correctly and crashes when used. The other, and much more serious
problem, is that the game crashes if you have OVER one meg of
memory. The game has a little sticker in the corner that reads 1
MEG ONLY, and it means it. The sloppy conversion was programmed at
        MicroProse UK.

The first problem can be solved by using the PD program Disk Doctor
or anything else that edits sectors. Take th file RINSTALL.PRG and
change every instance of COLOUR.LMB to COLOUR.PIX. You may also
try manually copying both disks to a folder labeled RAILROAD,
        bypassing the installation altogether.

Nothing I've tried can really correct the second problem, but there
IS a way to use Railroad Tycoon [if] you have more than one meg.
The solution comes from Todd Johnson and it is quite simple: use
the shareware program called MAKE1MEG.TOS. It "masks" off any and
all RAM above 1 meg. The program is one of GEnie's earliest files
and I've uploaded it to both Delphi and CompuServe. Run it first,
and Railroad Tycoon works beautifully! One of the year's best
games. Strategy freaks, don't even wait a second. Swat the bugs
and put on your conductor's hat!
1232.6Populous and Powermonger!SCAACT::BROWNLWed Jan 15 1992 15:0210
I can't beleive no one has mentioned Populous and Powermonger.

These are two great strategy games in the nature of Empire, but they
are graphically driven. I think both are awesome games. There are
write-ups about each somewhere in this notes file. They are by BULFROG
and are high quality, ultra-interactive strategy games.

Get them (or one of them) and you WILL be hooked! :^)

One other thing about RR tycoon. If you're too successful, all the
number's overflow - this is a major bummer. If you play games for
scores, this can ruin your enjoyment. Still a good game tho'. Utopia is
    OK too.

I bought Railroad Tycoon yesterday, and was all prepared to edit the
RINSTALL program, as suggested in the Atari User article; but the
sector editor program I was using showed that there were no references
to COLOUR.LMB, and plenty of references to COLOUR.PIX. So I decided to
just go ahead and run the program, and it ran without a hitch. So I
infer that Microprose must have fixed the problem after the initial
    release.
