1220.0. "VAXstation 3100 <-> Mega ST 2" by UTRTSC::BOSMAN (We're just sugar mice in the rain) Mon Dec 23 1991 08:37

Hello out there,

Just bought a VAXstation 3100.
Until now I did all my work on a mega ST 2, and I love it.

I want the ST to communicate with the VAX.
Knowing that it must be possible I looked through many of the notes.
I'm confused now.

What hard- and software requirements are there and how do I get them?

Many thanks for taking time to answer my questions.

Merry Xmas, Sjaak Bosman.

All you need is a terminal cable to connect from the 3100 (DECconnect)
to the ST (RS232-C), and terminal programs for both ends.

For the cable I would get a DECconnect cable with the correct (male/female)
adapter to go to the ST. I would recommend you use the printer port (TTA3)
on your 3100 since the terminal port won't do modem controls correctly. You
can get the cable and adapter from DEC-Direct (US)1-800-DIGITAL.

For software, it all depends on what kind of communication you want to do.
1) File transfers/terminal access.
If this is part of an official DEC thing, I would look at Jeff's
Whack. You would need to talk with Jeff and your manager to find
out if your 3100 counts as Digital use.
If you cannot use Whack, I would use CKERMIT on both ends. You
should be able to find both versions here on the net.
2) Terminal access only.
On the ST to VAX side, FLASH, UNITERM, WHACK(If you are allowed), or
any other Comm program that does VT emulation.
On the VAX to ST side, you can use SET HOST/DTE, but then you
would need a CLI that can accept input from the modem port.
3) Some other kinda of special communications. You would need custom
programs that talk what ever protcol you use.

Of course what we really want is for someone to code DECNET-ST so we

1220.4And the configuration is ... UTRTSC::BOSMANWe're just sugar mice in the rainMon Jul 06 1992 03:5125
Hi,

I started this topic, so here is the configuration I ended up with.

ATARI                          VAX
-------//RS-232---------TTA1:\\--------
Uniterm                        C-Kermit

I simply connect the terminal-cable from my VT420 to the RS-232 port of
the Atari (via a female-adapter ofcourse).

Terminal-emulation (Uniterm) and file-transfer (Uniterm and C-Kermit)
are working both very well. At first I tried WHACK but somehow I wasn't
able to run it properly (OPCOM message about 'not wired correctly').

Especially I like the Single Line Editor, because I do a lot of
ALL-IN-1 stuff and in ALL-IN-1 you only can get the last entered line
back.

Now I'm also able to transfer files from/to the portfolio, using the
Mega ST as in between.

Thanks everyone who contributed this conference on this topic.

1220.5ZOO problemUTRTSC::BOSMANWe're just sugar mice in the rainMon Jul 06 1992 12:329
Hi,

I've notice that there's a version V2.0 E15 of Uniterm ... but in ZOO
format. I've found ZOO 2.1 but ... also in ZOO format.

Where can I get an unZOOed version of ZOO or Uniterm V2.0 E15?

Thanks for your help,
Sjaak.
1220.6How about a .ARC fileYNGSTR::WALLACEMon Jul 06 1992 14:386
oldtmr::$1$dua8:[wallace.public.st]uni20e11.arc

If you don't have ARC for the ST, you can extract them using
arc for VMS, arc for Ultrix, or VMSsweep for VMS.

1220.7E11 <> E15UTRTSC::BOSMANWe're just sugar mice in the rainTue Jul 07 1992 02:478
Ray,

Then, what are the differences between UNI20E11 and UNI20E15? I already
use UNI20E11. And UNI20E15 ia only available in ZOO format.

Thanks for your help.

1220.8where is version E15 on the net?UFHIS::BFALKENSTEINTue Jul 07 1992 07:5820

Sjaak, you might want to look into

UFRCS2::DISK$FS:[FALKENSTEIN.ATARI.COMPRESS] for ZOO.TOS

this self-extracting archive contains several versions of Zoo including
some shells for Zoo. You don't need a (un)packer programm, simply
doubleclick on that file when you have it on your Atari. It will
extract into a folder called "ZOO" with the related subdirectories if
there are any.

In [.ATARI.MODEM] is also UNI20E11.TOS (also selfextracting). If you
have the location of version E15 I would be very much interested to
add it to the library.

Bernd,

Thanks for that pointer. Concerning E15, I've read about it in this
conference, see topic 9.330. Below you'll find a substract of it.

VERMNT::/usr1/st/uniterm/uniterm.20e.015.zoo is a brand new bug
fix release of uniterm. The previous release was a couple years
ago, rev. 11. This is rev.15. For those who prefer the distribution
is also available as a compressed tar file name uniterm.20e.015.tar.Z

1220.10My right hand didn't know what my left was doingYNGSTR::WALLACETue Jul 07 1992 13:5010
Sorry about that Sjaak. I was using Uniterm at the time so I checked the
version I was using and it was the version you wanted, I then proceeded to
point you to the directory where I keep Uniterm. As it turns out it wasn't the
version I was running and I didn't pay close enough attention to the versio
nnumber in the file name.

I don't recall what the differences are between the two versions. I used
2.0e 010 for a long time with no problems.

1220.11Keep you informedUTRTSC::BOSMANWe're just sugar mice in the rainWed Jul 08 1992 04:0110
Ray,

I don't have problems either, I'm rather enthusiast. Maybe bugs fixed
in parts that I don't use.

Well, keep you informed if know more about UNI20E15.

Sjaak.

UNI20E15.ARC is now in oldtmr::$1$dua8:[wallace.public.st]

All I did was repackaged the .ZOO file made available by an earlier note. I
have not tried downloading this file, but have no reason to believe it is not
in working order.
