Hello all, is there anybody out there, who can tell me where to get a VI-like Editor for the ATARI ST series ? VI is the standard UNIX/ULTRIX editor. Ralf

Ralf, Look in Dweezl::Atari$Dsk:*vi*.* (Dweezl = 17.252) elvis.zoo - vi clone vi .arc - another one I've not tried these myself, but they are listed as vi type editors... Rich

thats the first time I have ever heard of anyone actually wanting to run VI! Who is a masochist then? 8>)) Pat K.

Actually Pat, I did try out 'vi' and it looks quite good (as far as 'vi' goes :^) It "works" quite nicely in the Gulam environment I've got set up (kind's one more thing to "fool" your friends into thinking you run a 'Unix' box :^) :^) :^) Rich

I've thought about it, but I'm not into laying out the $$$ required at this point.

Hello all again, i had asked for a VI-like Editor for the ST in .0 and got some replies. Thank you for the tip where to find ELVIS, Rich! The point is, there are some VI-like Clones for the Atari ST, some fairly good, but everyone has some specialities: LV : This Editor can only handle files with a size no greater than 32Kb. I think he has no named buffers (this cutting and pasting with "ayy for example) and is not able to work on more than one file. Stevie: Really nice, but no named buffers, and without named buffers no macros, poor keymapping, if you are not right on a token and do ^] what should jump to the tag you are placed on, it will throw bombs. Elvis : This one seems to be very good except for two reasons: - first there was no termcap file included with the .ARC file, therefore some keys produce 'cryptic' strings instead of just one character. - Why does someone who is able to programm such a complex thing like a sophisticated text editor such a thing: Elvis seems not to be capable to open more than one temporary file. Elvis has named buffers, therefore allowing you to execute a buffer, but you will fail trying to put the contents of that buffer into another file, because elvis has already one temporary file opened and can not open another one. Shit ! So i would like to know wether there are some other VI-Clones around. I'm not a masochist using VI. I learned to know VI during my diplom works that is one year behind now. Of course i had heard all these horror stories about it, but when i really used it, i found out, that this was the best editor i ever used. When i came to Digital, i felt uncomfortable with EDT and EVE. Now i have a VI clone that runs (fairly good) with VMS. (If someone is interested in that, please reply). Ralf
