1138.0. "Salvaging START Subscriptions" by UNXA::MADDEN (Tom Madden) Mon Jun 10 1991 09:35

Is anyone else here a subscriber to START Magazine?

They really seem to be doing nothing to make subscribers aware of how
the remainder of the subscriptions will be handled. From the online
discussions on Compuserve it seems they are searching for a legal
way to not give refunds. Having a subscription that expires in 1992 I
do not want this to happen.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what can be done? I plan on calling
California (if I can find a number from NJ) and then call Antic myself.
As of last Thursday the subscription house was still accepting orders!

Its been a couple of weeks since they announces their intentions not
to publish START and I think its time they let the subscribers in
on whats in store for them.

    Any ideas?

    Tom

Good Luck, Tom.

Personally, I doubt if anything would be served by you calling Start/Antic.
Even if you spoke with Tom Byron (editor) he wouldn't be able to tell you
anything specific as it's all in the hands of the legal folks now. There are a
lot of people owed money to from Start, and that includes several thousands of
dollars due to authors as well as subscribers.

For those of us that charged the subscription on VISA/MC, I wonder if we could
have the credit card stop payment. I know it can be done for recent billing
or purchase "conflicts". Is there a time limitation?

    Just an update.....

I have been calling Start to find out what was happening with refunds.
They said that they have been deluged with refund requests (gee... what
a suprise). You need to send a letter requesting a refund and giving
a reason for cancelling (mine was that they stopped publishing )

I have spoken to the 1 person handling subscriptions and basically they
are not giving refunds now. They won't say that right out, but the
refund requests are sitting in a pile for accounts payable, but they
    are just not paying them.

Any idea of recourse? I have just about written off the money, but
am considering writing the necessary letters to the postal service
for mail fraud. The thing that gets me, is that they aren't bankrupt,
    they're still publishing other magazines.

Gee, the same thing happened when ST-Log stopped publishing.
I think your only recourse is to make a real pain of yourself.
Call them up every week or so, but also write letters so everything
is documented. Send copies of the letters to the appropriate
attorneys general, Better Business Bureau, and anybody else you
can think of, and let them (Start) know that you are. Don't know
how mush all this will help, but it won't hurt and it might make
	you feel better.

	good luck
