1111.0. "STE Memory upgrade" by PAPERS::RADBURN ("One of the PC Robot Jox") Mon Apr 22 1991 07:48

I have just performed a memory upgrade on a 520 STE and would just like a sanity
check before I change things around again.

I opened up the ST and there are four SIMM sockets, two of which are populated
by the 256K SIMM modules, like so :-

------------------------    empty

------------------------    256K

------------------------    empty

------------------------    256K

I then inserted two 1MB SIMMs in the empty slots and powered on. A report on the
memory configuration indicated that I had the grand total of 1MB in the system.

I think the reason for this is that the machine does not look at the memory
intelligently and assumes that all the SIMMs are the same (ie/ 256K as it is in
the first slot) or there is a jumper that I do not know about that selects 1MB
or 256K SIMMs.

Questions :

1/ Are there any jumpers to change? I did not see any.

2/ If I take out the 256K SIMMs and insert the 1MB SIMMs in their place, will
   this yield 2MB? I should hope so!

3/ Is there any way of getting these SIMMs to co-habit giving 2 MB of memory?

Thanks for any input on this.

Gary.

1111.12.5MB is not in the ROM'sPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaMon Apr 22 1991 18:4310
As far as I know, your assumptions are correct, however, 2.5MB is not
supported in the STe ROM's, but there is a commonly available
autofolder patch that corrects this. I think I saw a version of it on
GEnie. It's not large. If you would like, I could try to fetch it
next time I log in there.

And, yes, you should put the 1MB simms in the place where the original
ones were, and you should get 2MB.

Hey - how do you get 1MB with only two 256K simms? or was this a 520STe?

I thought as much.

Oh well, looks like I'll just have to make do with 2Mb - (unless the patch will
give me 2.5Mb with this config - if you could pull it across Jeff it would be
much appreciated)

It is on a 520STe that the upgrade is being done, hence the paltry 512K to start
with :-(

1111.32.5MB softwae fix available herePRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaThu Apr 25 1991 22:394
PRNSYS::USER2:[LOMICKAJ.HOBBY.ST]SIMMFIX2.ARC contains the code that
allows you to configure a 2.5MB STe. Let me know if it works for you.
It's a STREAM_LF file - VMS ARC will work with it. CVTARC V the file
before using Kermit's BIN mode or STRANSF.
