1099.0. "Usenet archive sites - discussions/questions" by YNOTME::WALLACE () Fri Mar 22 1991 13:09

Please use this note for questions and discussions pertaining to Usenet
ST archives.

The mail address for the two popular archives are -

	nm%DECWRL::"[email protected]"

	nm%DECWRL::"[email protected]"

Just for your reference - The first archive used to be (and sometimes still
is) known as "The Terminator archive" and more recently has come to be known
as "The BART archive". The second archive is known as "The Panarthea archive".

These archive sites have a substantial collection of public domain programs
for the ST. All of which are available by mail (the files are UUEncoded).

Always read the HELP file for a particular archive before trying to get files
from it for the first time. Each archive site has slightly different commands
and rules.

The first two replies to this note contain the HELP file for the two archives
mentioned above. However you can always obtain an up-to-date HELP file and/or
HELP files for other archive sites by sending a one line mail message with the
word HELP to the archive site in question.

Anytime you get files from an archive site please share them with the rest of
us (this is obviously not a requirement just a request :-). Availabilty of
programs on the E-net should still be made as a reply to note 9, not here.

Subj:	How to use the Panarthea archive server

This message comes to you from the archive server at panarthea.sun.com,
archive-server%[email protected]. It received a message from you asking for
help.

The archive server is a mail-response program. That means that you mail it a
request, and it mails back the response.

The archive server is a very dumb program. It does not have much error
checking. If you don't send it the commands that it understands, it will just
answer "I don't understand you".

The archive server has 4 commands. Each command must be the first word on a
line. The archive server reads your entire message before it does anything,
so you can have several different commands in a single message. The archive
server treats the "Subject:" header line just like any other line of the
message. You can use any combination of upper and lower case letters in the
commands.

The archives are organized into a series of directories and subdirectories.
Each directory has an index, and each subdirectory has an index. The
top-level index gives you an overview of what is in the subdirectories, and
the index for each subdirectory tells you what is in it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are bored with reading documentation and just want to try something,
then send the server a message containing the line
	send index binaries
When you get the index back, it will give you the names of all of the binaries
in the archive; send the server another message asking it to send you the
files that you want:
	send binaries/volume1 arc uucode tinydu
etc.

If you are using a mailer that understands "@" notation, send to
archive-server%[email protected]. If your mailer deals in "!" notation, try
sending to {someplace}!sun!panarthea!archive-server, e.g.
decwrl!sun!panarthea!archive-server. For other mailers, you're on your own.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is some more documentation. The server has 5 commands:

"help" command: The command "help" or "send help" causes the server to
send you the help file. You already know this, of course, because
you are reading the help file. No other commands are honored in a
message that asks for help (the server figures that you had better
read the help message before you do anything else).

"index" command: if your message contains a line whose first word is "index",
then the server will send you the top-level index of the contents of
the archive. If there are other words on that line that match
the name of subdirectories, then the indexes for those subdirectories
are sent instead of the top-level index. For example, you can say
		index
	or
		index sources

You can then send back another message to the archive server,
using a "send" command (see below) to ask it to send you the files
whose name you learned from that list.

(Footnote: "index binaries" and "send index binaries" mean the
same thing: you can use the "send" command instead of the "index"
command, if you want, for getting an index.

If your message has an "index" or a "send index" command, then all
other "send" commands will be ignored. This means that you cannot
get an index and data in the same request. This is so that index
requests can be given high priority.

"send" command: if your message contains a line whose first word is "send",
then the archive server will send you the item(s) named on the
rest of the line. To name an item, you give its directory and its
	name. For example
		send binaries/volume2 ccprint
	or
		send sources/volume1 fastdump

Note that there is a space between the directory (category) name
and the names of the actual files.

Once you have named a category, you can put as many names as you
like on the rest of the line; they will all be taken from that
	category. For example:
		send sources/volume2/sed part01 part02

Each "send" command can reference only one directory. If you
would like to get one binary and one source, you must use two
"send" commands, one beginning "send sources" and the other
	beginning "send binaries".

If the server must use uucp mail to send your files, then it
cannot send more than 100K bytes in one message. If you ask for
more than it can send, then it will send as much as it can and
	ignore the rest.

"path" command: The "path" command exists to help in case you do not
get responses from the server when you mail to it.

Sometimes the server is unable to return mail over the incoming path.
There are dozens of reasons why this might happen, and if you are a
true wizard, you already know what those reasons are. If you are an
apprentice wizard, you might not know all the reasons but you might
know a way to circumvent them.

If you put in a "path" command, then everything that the server
mails to you will be mailed to that address, rather than to the
return address on your mail. For example, if you say
	    path pyramid!rutgers!zakkaroo!jj
then all mail sent by the server will be sent to that address.
Try to use the Internet as much as possible:
	    path [email protected]
	 or
	    path cunyvm.cuny.edu!realhost!user
will both result in faster delivery than routing through dozens
	of uucp-only sites.

If you would like the server to determine a uucp path for you,
using the most recent pathalias data, then put in a "path" command
	with [email protected], e.g.:
	    path [email protected]
As you probably know, the pathalias data is sometimes wrong, but it
	is often right.

"id" command: The "id" command allows you to place an identifying word in
the archive-server's reply. This is useful if you're sending
multiple requests to the server, and want to easily tell which
reply is which. The ID code is one word long. For example:
	    id fnord-files

EXAMPLES:

1) Find out the list of binaries that are in the archive. Send this message:
	To: archive-server%[email protected]
	Subject: hi there

	index binaries

2) Get the file-find Dumas uuencode utilities from the archive (you have
learned their file names from the list that was sent to you in step 1).
	To: archive-server%[email protected]
	Subject: send binaries/volume1 uucode

	send binaries/volume5 ff

3) Get the mini-BBS binaries, and send them over the best path to my site:
	To: sun.com!panarthea!archive-server

	path [email protected]
	send binaries/volume5/minibbs part01 part02 part03

NOTES:

The archive server acknowledges every request by return mail. If you don't
get a message back in a day or two (depending on how close you are to panarthea
on the network) you should assume that something is going wrong, and perhaps
try a "path" command. If you aren't getting anywhere and you don't know a
wizard to help you, try putting
	path [email protected]
in your message, where "myname" is your mailbox name and "site" is the uucp
name of your machine.

The delays in sending out large items from the archives are intentional, to
make it difficult to get copies of everything in the archives. If you are new
to the network and would like to get all back issues of everything, you
should post a request to a regional newsgroup asking whether someone who is
geographically near you can provide them.

Don't send mail with long lines. If you want to ask for 20 binaries in one
request, you don't need to put all 20 of them in one "send" command. The
archive server is quite able to handle long lines, but before your mail
message is received by the archive server it might pass through relay
computers that will choke on long lines.

The archive server does not respond to requests from users named "root",
"system", "daemon", or "mailer". This is to prevent mail loops. If your name
is "Bruce Root" or "Joe Daemon", and you can document this, I will happily
rewrite the server to remove this restriction. Yes, I know about Norman
Mailer and Waverley Root. Norman doesn't use netmail and Waverley is dead.
1099.1Terminator / BART help fileYNOTME::WALLACEFri Mar 22 1991 15:1775
The Terminator/BART Atari Archive Help File

Welcome to BART, Brode's Archive Retrieval Thang, Terminator's Atari mail
server. To use the server, send a message to [email protected].
The subject line is ignored. The body of the message should contain, one per
line, any of the following commands. Each of the commands sends its output
back to you via mail.

	"help"
This command tells BART to send you this file.

	"index"
This command tells BART to send you the Index.
Currently, the index is a listing of all the files
int the Atari area. Descriptions of various files
can sometimes be found in the Index file of each
directory. These must be requested individually
with the send command. They are currently incomplete,
but it's all we have for now.

	"path mail-address"
This command tells BART where to send the requested
files. This is useful for specifying a mail path.

	"send directory/filename"
This is the command that sends out files from the
archive. The server only lets you get files from
the ~atari hierarchy so you only have to specify the
subdirectories in the atari tree. You can determine
the path and filename from the Index file. For example,
if you wanted to get arc, you'd send a message with
a line in the body that looked like
			send archivers/arc.ttp
to get the index file, use
			send Index
Binary programs are uuencoded before they are sent
out. If you miss parts of a file, rather than re-request
the whole thing, you can give BART a comma separated
list of the parts you are missing and it will send you
		  those parts. For example...
			send languages/gcc.arc aa,ac,af
This is the only way to get files larger than 400K.
You must request the file by parts until you have the
		  whole thing.
Note: BART does not accept wildcards such as ? or *.

	"sendb directory/filename"
This is similar to the send command except that it
always uuencodes the files that it sends out. Send
tries to determine whether it is sending a binary
or ascii file and only sends uuencoded messages when
		  necessary.

While the commands are not case sensitive, the filenames are, so be
careful you are using the correct case before complaining that the server
is broken.

You are limited to 400k and/or 5 files per day. It takes 24 hours from
the time that bart received your last message to clear your quota
records. BART does not queue requests that went over quota and send them
out later. You have to re-request them 24 hours later.

BART tends to ignore your mistakes. You will not receive a message back
if you gave an illegimate command or specified a bad file name. This was
a deliberate design decision. It may not be user friendly, but it keeps
the mail queues short and prevents a couple other nasty things.

Submissions are always welcome. Please mail them to
		    [email protected]

1099.3What's a .tar? - one answer...SKIVT::HEARNTime will tell...Mon Mar 25 1991 10:5322

    	Ray,
    		Thanks for starting this note...
    						  Rich

    	re: Brian (9.269)

a .tar file is a backup file for Ultrix (or U*ix) and you're
in luck since the archivers DO HAVE 'De-tar-ers' for the ST. You'll
also need a way to 'Un-Compress' some items - guess what! - you're in
    	luck again.

    		I'd suggest looking for COMPRESS.ZOO & STTAR.ARC on:

    				Dweezl::Atari$Dsk:

    	the directory is (W:re) so you should have no problems with access;
feel free to 'look-around' - that goes for "everyone" on the net
with Atari's. I can 'remember' a few folks who helped me getting
    	started...

    Hello all,
I found out what caused my problem, the files was to big.
You have to ask for partial transfer, as .....

    send
    nm%decwrl::"[email protected]"

send graphics/filename.ext aa,ab,ac ...and so on
but be careful the maximum amount for one day is 400kbytes
    or maximum 5 files.

    Re: problem with Archivers.
I cant find the file in the directory you asked for "arcshl23.arc
    but "arcsh24.arc" is there.
Try that one instead it's a newer version.

Over the past week I've tried four times to get files from umich. The first
three times yielded nothing, the fourth time three out of the four requested
files arrived. When they did arrive they arrived within a few hours of the
request.

The files I was asking for are in the /games, /graphics, and /programming
directories.

I haven't tried any 'sub-directories'.

I just asked for and received from terminator a half hour later, this file -

So subdirectories don't seem to be the problem. Just getting files in general
from BART/Terminator seems to be flacky.

Everything that I have requested correctly, and was there, turned up.

I have sent numerous requests that were incorrect however. Check that the
filename is correct and that the path is correct and that your return path
is correct.

Try requesting the index to make sure that BART can talk to you.

    Hi,

It's been a while since I toyed with SPECTRUM format files, but
I remember the .SPC being standard SPECTRUM files, and the .SPS
    	to be "smooshed" SPECTRUM files.

Be careful about selecting the [SMOOSH] button in some of the
displayers, as it thinks you WANT TO SMOOSH ALL YOUR FILES! I
made this mistake once, and had a hard disk error during the
translation. I ended up with NO .SPC or .SPS files!!!!

Dear mac-archive-user....

I have some very very disturbing and shocking (at least for me) news
to relay to you....

Due to budget constraints at the U-M Information Technology Division,
a tenative decision has been made to cut and cease support of the largely
volunteer archive service (i.e. mac.archive.umich.edu, msdos.archive.umich.edu,
next.archive.umich.edu, linguistics.archive, atari, etc.).

Here is a copy of the message I received about a half hour ago
from my supervisor on the project:

Subject: Death of the Archives?
Date: Thu, 13 Feb 92 23:48:01 -0500
From: "Fred Swartz" <[email protected]>

... ...I don't know exactly how this will
affect the 0.25 part of Allan and Mike that RS pays for, perhaps CSS
and CITI will pick it up. I'll let you know when/if I find out.

When I talked to Mike Clark (my manager in Research Systems) about
continuing the archives on volunteer power (as it largely runs right
now), he was very negative on the idea, but failed to supply a
convincing argument for abandoning it. I'm stunned and upset.
The Archives have managed very well on volunteer effort up til now and
it seems to me that something else is going on other than a genuine
concern for serving the users.

I don't know what this means for the Archives, although they aren't
going to be turned off tomorrow. I'll let you know whatever I find out
as soon as I can.

  -- Fred

-----

I talked on the phone with Fred and we both agree that this decision
seems very unfair to both the students/faculty who use the archives
here at the University of Michigan, and you... the users on the
Internet, Bitnet, UUCP, etc.

To me, it doesn't make much sense to cut off support for the archives.
Both I and Allan make around $70 a week working on the archives (I work
on the Mac side, he works on the msdos side).. the rest of the time
we spend is voluntary, like the twenty or so other people who add/keep
up the archives here. The archives are probably one of the most popular
and beneficial services that ITD offers. There may be other ways to trim
the budget, but cutting off something that costs nearly nothing
to begin with doesn't seem very wise.

Please help us out. E-mail in support of our archives can be sent
to [email protected]. We don't want to flood the
senior managers' mailboxes, and we're still thinking about what we
can do to save our archives. Comments can be sent
to us at "[email protected]". To address the entire
archive group, you may send e-mail to "[email protected]".

Thanks....

Well folks,

It would appear that the archives will continue on, at least in a
reduced service form. By this I mean that Fred Swartz, our archive
administrator, was RIF'd (fired). The archives themselves will continue
on, by volunteer power (as a.a always has been).

Where they will wind up is the current question. There has been
talk of locating them on machines in various departments throughout
the U, but I'd go so far as to say that a.a will stay put, at least for
a while longer. The others will undoubtly move soon.

Many of you have asked (and even hypothesized) about exactly what
it going on here; why were the archives in danger in the first place.
From my point of view, which is very limited, it appeared to be
at first a budget cut. However, as more discussion took place,
and more lies and half-truths were told, it appears that there's some
higher agenda ofr ITD management. What is it? Beats me.

I'd like to thank those of you that sent mail in to the
archive.support address. There was some particularly compelling
testimonials there, and I think your outcry, combined with
the continued "what the hell?" from the archivists here, made the
difference. It's a bummer we lost Fred, but ...........

Any further comments, concerns, or clarifications to the address above (or below)
