1018.0. "Gemini" by SIEVAX::JAMIE (Use me, Use me... Ooops! Excuse me!) Tue Nov 20 1990 11:12

    Does anyone have Gemini on-line ? What's it like compared to Gem ?
    I understand there's a new version out soon... does anyone know
    anything about it ?

    Cheers,

        Yes, there is a new Version (V1.2) out (since begin of november).
    GEMINI can be compared with NEODESK, i.e. an alternate GEM Desktop. It
    has a very powerfull commandline shell (called 'Mupfel'), which closely
    integrated with the graphical shell ('Venus'), the 2nd part of GEMINI.
    GEMINI is shareware and the authors expect 50 DM as shareware fee.

    One (minor?) problem exists for our english speeking friends: As
    far as I know, there is only a german version available (at this time),
    (.RSC, error messages, documentation). I could ask one of the
    authors, whether they will build an english version of GEMINI.

    Although I have NEODESK3 too, I use GEMINI now!

    If you're still interested, I could put the (german) version of Gemini
    to the network.

    Regards from Cologne.

    Hilmar.

    I think I read somewhere in the usenet conference about an English
    version - but 1.2 is purely German at the moment...

    I'd like to get the English version if it exists!

    Incidently, and totally off the subject, does anyone know of a good PD
    or Shareware assembler ? I've got Fast ASM and can't afford DevPac 2...
    so something between the two would be great! (I doubt there's something
    in the PD that's as good as DevPac 2!!!)

    Hi,

    I talked to Gereon Steffens, one of the authors of GEMINI, via mailbox
    (K2 within Mausnet). He told me that there will be an official english
    version of GEMINI. I don't know an exact date, but I assume a 1 to 2
    months time frame (the documentation for V1.2 is rather extensive, so
    there is much to translate).

    Notwithstanding there is still an english version of GEMINI V1.1
    available. If there is any interest in that version, I could make
    it available on the net.

    The _GERMAN_ version 1.2 of GEMINI is now available on:

    The English version of Gemini V1.1 was posted on Usenet but I missed
    it. My solution was to hack the resource files using a resource
    editor and my very (limited) knowledge of German.

1018.6English version in PanartheaFSSB::SODERLUNDMon Dec 03 1990 10:0316
    I found the English version v1.1 on the "Panarthea arhive service".
    It's in Volume11/geminiuk/part01 to part06, just mail to ...

    and type the following after ... Subj:....

    send binaries/volume11/geminiuk part01 part02 part03 part04

    That's all, by the way the format is UU encoded. Use an editor to
    get rid of all unneccesary text in the file, then
    UU decode the file it's easy.

1018.8...a 2nd GEMINI V1.2 patchCOL01::BOEHMIrren ist mnnlichFri Dec 07 1990 08:2020
    Hi,

    I talked to Gereon Steffens again. He told me, that they are working
    on the translation of the documentation to english. This will take
    about 1 to 2 months.

    For users of the german version: There is a second patch available.
    It's for one of the supplied fonts (Gemini Bold 9). With this font,
    text appears underlined when in Console Mode (Mupfel). The new patched
    font file (and a short german problem description) can be found
    on:

    COL01::disk$user_4:[boehm.meister.st]bagb09.lzh             and
    COL01::disk$user_4:[boehm.meister.st]fntbug.txt

    (pls. use exact file spec., no wildcards!)

    I' keep you informed.

1018.9Patch For TOS 1.0?AQUA::ROSTYour friendly neighborhood sadistTue Dec 18 1990 09:3410

    I pulled down GeminiUK, but found to my dismay it requires TOS 1.2.
    Anyone know of a rumored patch for TOS 1.0 users? I checked the
    panarthea archive and didn't find one.

    Panarthea does have the two shells MUPFEL and VENUS that are used in
    Gemini, and these can be used standalone with TOS 1.0....or so the docs
    claim.  I'll find out tonight  8^)  8^)

    LHARC V1.13, by Thomas Questor, Hamburg (Germany)).

    If you have any problems with the download, let me know. If there
    should be any problems with GEMINI itself, you can contact Gereon
    directly via:

                      DECWRL::"[email protected]"

    which is the Mouse-BBS "K2" within the german "Maus-Net". The BBS has
    an Internet-Gateway through UNIDO (the german Internet-backbone (.de)).
    You can talk to him in englisch of course.

    Or you can write your messages to the ATARI-Notesfile or directly to me
    via VAXmail. I'll like to act as a courier handing them over to him via
    "K2" BBS, where i am a user.

    Have fun and regards. / Hilmar.

    Btw.: Although I think it's clear: GEMINI is shareware.

     Is anyone using Gemini v2.0? Although my German is not good enough
    to fully understand what it can really do, it's quite outstanding IMHO
    and looks as though it would be an excellent replacement desktop
    with 'MaG!X'.

1018.12Upload GEMINI 1.99?EDDF10::ECKELNo sports.Thu Apr 07 1994 11:1513
    Hello,

    to my knowledge, the current version of GEMINI is 1.99. It incorporates
    the features of GEMINI 2.0, but may be looked upon as a beta version.

    If there is any interest, I can upload it during next week. I can't
    tell anything about it, as I'm using EASE 3.1, which is a commercial
    product and looks a lot more "smooth" to me (can't say it in other
    words, it is just a feeling :-)).

    Regards,

      Peter.
1018.13How does Gemini compare...CECEHV::NAGEL_EErlend NagelFri Apr 08 1994 03:566
    How do Ease and Gemini compate to Teradesk or Neodesk? Neodesk seems
    especially interesting since it will support the multitasking offered
    by Geneva.

    Erlend.

1018.14Gemini also supports MultiTasking...UIST::ROBSONBFri Apr 08 1994 05:4620

     'Gemini' also supports multitasking, as far as I can see from the
    documentation, which mentions MultiTos and MaG!X. I don't have the
    docs in front of me at the moment, and cannot recall if it mentions
    Geneva - perhaps Peter can give us a brief summary from the German
    'read-me' file?
      I have a demo of 'Ease', and have used 'Teradesk' and 'Neodesk'
    occasionally until I installed TOS2.06 and have been using the
    TOS2.06 desktop for over a year, but am now looking for a replacement
    desktop to go with 'MaG!X' when it arrives.
      My own personal prefference is for 'Gemini', with which I feel very
    comfortable as regards general appearance, ease of use, and features.
    I have already installed it as an 'autostart' application, in
    preference to the TOS2.06 desktop I normally use, and in the meantime
    I have mailed the authors to ask if there will be ongoing plans for
    an English version, and also to ask what the shareware cost will be.

    Best Regards,
    Brian

1018.15NeoDesk - GENEVA not compatibleKERNEL::BLANDNorman Bland 833 3797 CSC, BasingstokeFri Apr 08 1994 06:217
    I use NeoDesk V3.03 (GENEVA requires V3.04 min or V4.0); according to
    System Solutions, Mag!X and Neodesk are not compatible. From the
    praises that Peter Eckel has given EASE, I was going to use that with
    Mag!X. From what Brian is saying about GEMINI, I believe I should give
    that a try first. Brian, where can I get a copy of GEMINI in the UK.

1018.16('Gemini v1.99')UIST::ROBSONBFri Apr 08 1994 10:2612

     Hi Norman, I can send you a copy of 'Gemini2' (actually v1.99 as
    Peter has pointed out) if you like, I have mailed you to ask for an
    address.
    	I have to say that the demo of 'Ease' that I tried was of course
    a limited demo and I think that the full, current version is very
    powerfull and attractive to use, but from what I have seen of 'Gemini2'
    I believe that it, too, is well worth a look.

1018.20Probably not for 1.99EDDF10::ECKELNo sports.Thu Apr 14 1994 09:0720

    Hello,

    > Is there any English version of Gemini 1.99 ?

    No, at least not in the archives I've seen on the BBSs.

    Version 1.99 is, as you can see in the version number, not the final
    release. There are signs that provisions are made to use foreign (not
    german :-) ) messages, for example a separate file containing all
    messages used by Gemini. But the german one is the only file supplied,
    it is a binary file and there still is no dcumentation on how to create
    it.

    I can contact the author and ask about an english version (ressource
    and message file).

    Regards,

      Peter.
1018.21English version soon..?FAILTE::ROBSONBTue Apr 26 1994 05:348

     Someone on 'CIX' here in the UK has translated the RSC and MSG
    files into English, and my understanding is that he is trying to
    contact the author to see if it can be accepted as 'official' and
    be made generally available.

    Brian :-)
