| Hi Peter,
i run my both ATARI 1040 ST now since 3-mar-1990, one with a MEGAFILE-30
without any Problems.
I use them for TCP/IP Routing in an HAM Packet-Radio-Network
Environment.
The only thing what i do is:
Switching the SM124 off, when i leave it alone, as you do.
But i must say, that the Equipment is located i a cool, dry cellarroon.
About 18 degrees celsius. There is no overheating at all.
One thing i have to do once a week: Removing any dust with a
vacuumcleaner.

I've left mine on for several days and the only problem I've seen
is the mouse getting flakey, but that is due to the Atari design
and not leaving the machine on.
The only fire hazard I'm aware of (only read about it, haven't
seen it) is impact printer heads - lots of current, which causes
it to heat up quite a bit when something fails.
I have seen one of our FireFoxs smoke.

| In the meantime I made my own experiences:
I left my Mega 1 permanently on (well, except a few days when I was
working at the hard disk interface) for the last six months.
When I don't use the system, the Atari works as a thermometer,
collecting the actual outside temperature and writing the values to
diskette every ten minutes. The monitor is then turned off as well as
the hard disk (which has to be disconnected, else the floppy will
contain junk data afterwards). The room temperature is about 22
centigrades (~72 F).
No problems at all up to now. I like it. :-)
