    	As a service to others who may one day find themselves in this
    	situation, I'll answer my own question with the answer that
    	came off the Usenet.

    	MS-DOS, apparently, won't work - one MUST have PC-DOS

    	Being a newcomer to DOS, I did not know that there was a difference,
    	a kind soul from the Usenet pointed this fact out to me.

| 940.2 | You need PC-DOS to boot from HD. | BAGELS::FELDMAN | Jerry Feldman DTN 227-3279 | Thu Aug 23 1990 15:27 | 8 |

    You must run PC-DOS to be able to boot DOS from your hard disk. However,
    if you boot DOS from a floppy, you may certainly use your C: and D:
    partitions, and share them with your ST data. Also, a PC may only boot
    from the C: partition. Since you have to execute PC-DITTO (ostensably from
     the hard disk), booting DOS from a diskette isn't too bad, as long as
    the DOS utilities are on the HD.

    Understood, now, but not at the time. What is PC-DOS used for vs
    MS_DOS?

| 940.4 | Subtleties | BAGELS::FELDMAN | Jerry Feldman DTN 227-3279 | Mon Aug 27 1990 15:49 | 8 |
| | The differences between PC-DOS and MS-DOS are minor, but subtle. Both
    are essentially the same "operating system". PC-DOS is the version that
    comes with real IBM PCs. MS-DOS is the more generic version which is
    sold by Microsoft. Both have identical interfaces. The subtlety lies in
    the interface between the OS and the BIOS. For some reason, the way
    Bill Teal engineered PC-DITTO, he was able to get PC-DOS to boot
    directly from hard disk, but not MS-DOS. Also, note that some clones
    have there own slightly customized versions of MS-DOS.

    Jerry,

    	Thanks for the explanations... Oh well, guess I'll just have to
    	use it without the 'boot' capability. I don't mind that so
    	much, now, knowing that I was doing doing things right :^)
    	even tho' with the wrong OS :^( Chalk it up to 'live and
    	learn' on my part.

    							Tnx agn,

    							 .   Rich
