918.0. "Imperium" by SIEVAX::JAMIE (Use me, Use me... OOPS excuse me!) Fri Jul 06 1990 05:59

Imperium is a game which puts you in the seat of the Leader of Earth
(and our solar system) in a galaxy of alien empires.

The objective of the game is to either survive for 1000 years (a rare
drug, known as nostrum, will extend your lifespan... but beware; once
taken, the dosage must be maintained else you die within a year) or
control all the planets in the galaxy.

You have control over just about everything you can think of; fleets of
spacecraft from scouts to destroyers to Ark ships for colonisation,
economic factors - taxation of imported and exported goods on an empire
by empire basis. Various ways of forming alliances with alien empires,
embargoing abilities against individual empires... the list goes on...

It's a massive game and it will take months to complete (then you play
it all over again with a greater difficulty factor!!!).

You also control subordinates; you can allot them jobs of planetary
leadership, fleet command or ambassadorial status to a particular
empire. You can also have military, economic and diplomatic advisors -
these will do most of the donkey work for you, leaving you to come up
with the cunning plans and also freeing you to manage your (sometimes
treachorous) subordinates... you can reward your subordinates with
money, civilian titles, military titles and nostrum if you so please.
This will change their loyalty to you if you do it correctly, but if
you give them too much too quickly or not enough they'll be plotting
for your demise... you have a pool of subordinates with which to
    shuffle...

I could go on for megabytes trying to explain this game; suffice to say
that I bought this in favour of Damocles and, at first, I felt sick! I
thought I'd done something REALLY stupid (anyone got Damocles ? How
about a review...) but after a couple of hours I found myself
engrossed. It's a great strategy game but not one for the pure arcade
gamers; the graphics are minimal - it's mostly decision making. The
interface is excellent; they re-wrote a gem like interface and have
much improved it; it's now fast and stylish!!! Not a bit like the old
    Gem...!

Anyone else got it ? Any recommended strategies ?

    				Jamie.

Forgot to mention that every 50 years you undergo an election. If you
fail to get re-elected as leader of the empire the game ends. If you
get your subordinates unhappy, they'll compete ferociously in the
    elections against you.

After playing it a little more, I've also noticed that planets
sometimes revolt and defect to another empire. They also sometimes set
up new empires of their own... the more I play the game the more there
    seems to be!

I have just spent the whole weekend playing Imperium, and my advice is do
not buy this game unless you have plenty of free time.

It is probably the best game I have ever played (even better than
Empire).

The only useful things I have learnt so far is to always put your best
men in the trouble spots, and reward them slowly. Be aggressive, and
always sign a treaty with your victims before you attack them.

Let the other empires fight it out between them self's if possible, then
go in and take the planet they were fighting over, but beware of them
forming an alliance against you.

What is the highest technology you can reach ? I can't get past 255.

How do some of the enemy planets get a defence factor in the 1000's ?

I just got Imperium (well, actually, it was two days ago and the last
two evenings just sort of disappeared while I played....).

It looks like a great game. I've got a problem though. The rule book
I got is missing the beginning and end (but as compensation I got two
copies of the pages at almost the beginning and almost the end).

So now I'm stuck -- I can either keep playing not quite understanding
as much as I should or bite the bullet and send the rule book back to
Electronic Arts for a replacement (they won't send a replacement until
they receive the original -- such is the price of instruction
    book-based protection schemes!).

What a dilemma. Maybe I'll make up my mind by the time the week end
    ends.

Why not just take it back to the shop you bought it from and exchange
    it there ???

Or, better still, return the game, and start playing DECweb -)

It's like Decweb with a beautiful user interface and a much faster
turnaround of game turns... in fact these are the two things that
put me off of playing Decweb.

It's a bit like saying don't buy Elite because there's Galactic Trader
    on the net...

    RE .5 Progress report

Electronic Arts have now sent a new book in exchange for the defective
one. Very easy, no fuss, it just took a while.

To respond to one of the suggestions:

The game was purchased from a mail order house that wanted shipping
charges for replacing a defectivve product. The publisher of the
product was willing to pay shipping.

I'm not aware oof any store in my area that stocks ST software, at any
price. White Mountain in Nashua used to, but seems to be out of the
Atari software business. Anybody know of any other store stocking ST
software within reasonable distance of the Nashua, NH vicinity?

Try OnLine Computer at 450 S. Broadway in Salem. 894-6314

I've never been in there but I'm told that they moved all their Atari stuff
from their N. Reading store in Mass to the Salem store.
918.11How to get started...PIKES::BITTROLFFTue Sep 25 1990 11:4716
Greetings!

I picked up Imperium over the weekend but have had a hard time getting started.
I enjoy this type of simulation very much but for some reason have had a hard
time getting the hang of this one.

What should I concentrate on? Why can't I build an antenna? (No planets in
catchment range, how high do I have to get my tech level before I can 'catch'
one)? Right now I'm just sort of floundering around without a basic strategy,
how do all of you experts go about playing this game.

Also, my copy hangs frequently. Does anyone else have this problem.

Thanks for the help,

Steve

If your copy hangs, take it back and change it.

You will need to build your tech level at the beginning of the game, and
watch your money situation. Use the Imperial subsidise to help your tech
level and the infrastructure of you home planet.

I always build a Home Fleet to start with, which I use as a defence for my
planets, I also send out scouts to find good planets to colonise.

Spend some time organising you best men to run the key rolls, and as soon
as you can turn offensive.

918.13PIKES::BITTROLFFFri Oct 05 1990 11:438
Thanks for the advice.

How large of a home fleet?

I am getting the hang of it, but still haven't been able to figure out the
cause and effect for the various pieces.

Some where between 10 & 20, as if you make it too large you get stuck
with a fleet made up of low tec ships, and you have a limit on the number
    of ships you can have.

The higher your tec level the better ships you can build, I normaly
design my home fleet to have a high defense level.
