| Forgot to mention that every 50 years you undergo an election. If you
fail to get re-elected as leader of the empire the game ends. If you
get your subordinates unhappy, they'll compete ferociously in the
elections against you.
After playing it a little more, I've also noticed that planets
sometimes revolt and defect to another empire. They also sometimes set
up new empires of their own... the more I play the game the more there
seems to be!

I have just spent the whole weekend playing Imperium, and my advice is do
not buy this game unless you have plenty of free time.
It is probably the best game I have ever played (even better than
Empire).
The only useful things I have learnt so far is to always put your best
men in the trouble spots, and reward them slowly. Be aggressive, and
always sign a treaty with your victims before you attack them.
Let the other empires fight it out between them self's if possible, then
go in and take the planet they were fighting over, but beware of them
forming an alliance against you.
What is the highest technology you can reach ? I can't get past 255.
How do some of the enemy planets get a defence factor in the 1000's ?

| I just got Imperium (well, actually, it was two days ago and the last
two evenings just sort of disappeared while I played....).
It looks like a great game. I've got a problem though. The rule book
I got is missing the beginning and end (but as compensation I got two
copies of the pages at almost the beginning and almost the end).
So now I'm stuck -- I can either keep playing not quite understanding
as much as I should or bite the bullet and send the rule book back to
Electronic Arts for a replacement (they won't send a replacement until
they receive the original -- such is the price of instruction
book-based protection schemes!).
What a dilemma. Maybe I'll make up my mind by the time the week end
ends.

| It's like Decweb with a beautiful user interface and a much faster
turnaround of game turns... in fact these are the two things that
put me off of playing Decweb.
It's a bit like saying don't buy Elite because there's Galactic Trader
on the net...

| RE .5 Progress report
Electronic Arts have now sent a new book in exchange for the defective
one. Very easy, no fuss, it just took a while.
To respond to one of the suggestions:
The game was purchased from a mail order house that wanted shipping
charges for replacing a defectivve product. The publisher of the
product was willing to pay shipping.
I'm not aware oof any store in my area that stocks ST software, at any
price. White Mountain in Nashua used to, but seems to be out of the
Atari software business. Anybody know of any other store stocking ST
software within reasonable distance of the Nashua, NH vicinity?

918.11 | How to get started... | PIKES::BITTROLFF | | Tue Sep 25 1990 11:47 | 16 |
| Greetings!
I picked up Imperium over the weekend but have had a hard time getting started.
I enjoy this type of simulation very much but for some reason have had a hard
time getting the hang of this one.
What should I concentrate on? Why can't I build an antenna? (No planets in
catchment range, how high do I have to get my tech level before I can 'catch'
one)? Right now I'm just sort of floundering around without a basic strategy,
how do all of you experts go about playing this game.
Also, my copy hangs frequently. Does anyone else have this problem.
Thanks for the help,
Steve

| If your copy hangs, take it back and change it.
You will need to build your tech level at the beginning of the game, and
watch your money situation. Use the Imperial subsidise to help your tech
level and the infrastructure of you home planet.
I always build a Home Fleet to start with, which I use as a defence for my
planets, I also send out scouts to find good planets to colonise.
Spend some time organising you best men to run the key rolls, and as soon
as you can turn offensive.

| Thanks for the advice.
How large of a home fleet?
I am getting the hang of it, but still haven't been able to figure out the
cause and effect for the various pieces.

| Some where between 10 & 20, as if you make it too large you get stuck
with a fleet made up of low tec ships, and you have a limit on the number
of ships you can have.
The higher your tec level the better ships you can build, I normaly
design my home fleet to have a high defense level.
