877.2 | I've got it | SMURF::COUTU | He who will not risk, cannot win. | Wed May 30 1990 11:56 | 14 |
| I've gotten the RTX distribution and taken a look at it. It is
basically a programming library which you then have to use when you
compile your programs which are written to use it. You have to use
calls to the library functions and design your code in such a way as to
make effective use of RTX. You don't just get something already written
which will give you multi-tasking and it isn't a substitute for TOS.
Only an application written using RTX will be multitasking, other apps
will not be. Naturally one of the best applications to write using it
is a command line interpreter (or shell) and that is exactly what
Beckmeyer did with it. He sells the MT-C Shell through his company,
which is a fully multitasking implementation of a UNIX type C shell.

877.3 | Multi-tasking GEM DOS | BAGELS::FELDMAN | Jerry Feldman DTN 227-3279 | Wed May 30 1990 14:31 | 6 |
| Digital Research has demo'd a Multi-Tasking GEM/GEMDOS on the Atari. I
have not heard any info as to when (and if) Atari would ever
incorporate it into the ST. If Atari is going to support the ST line,
it really needs to announce a multi-tasking version. Knowing the
Tramiels, they are probably trying to get DRI to pay for putting it
into the Atari.

877.4 | ... still interested... | VAOA01::JSTEWART | RMS is a LAYERED PRODUCT... | Wed May 30 1990 22:05 | 8 |
| Dan:
I am still interested in RTX. Since it is touted as shareware,
would it be possible for you to put the kit in some network visible
place so that I can get a look at it?

877.5 | Here you go... | SMURF::COUTU | He who will not risk, cannot win. | Thu May 31 1990 17:37 | 10 |
| Okay, pull it off my ULTRIX workstation.
vermnt::/usr3/atari/micrortx/MICRORTX.ARC
or if you prefer I've unpacked the arc file in that same directory. If
you're only used to VMS remember that ULTRIX is case-sensitive so you
must specify the case exactly as I have it above in order to get the
file.
