873.0. "Reviews on Star LC10 Colour Printer." by RUTILE::BISHOP (Don't touch that red butt...boom) Wed May 23 1990 08:42

Does anybody have any thoughts on the Star LC10 *colour* printer.

I'd like a printer, that i can dump screens to, aswell as being
capable in the letter writing section.

This is the kind of price i had in mind.

Anybody got any better ideas ?

    Lewis.

Have had an LC10 Colour for a couple of months now and I am very
    pleased with it.

It is robustly made, has a feeling of quality about it. It handles
paper better than an LA50 or LA75.

I use it with DEGAS Elite and 1stWord+ and am satisfied with both
independently and together (1stWord+ is brilliant at creating compound
    documents with pictures and text!).

Colour is not perfect although, I suspect, is as good as you will get
from a dot matrix. DEGAS makes a damn good attempt at getting the colours
right by various shading patterns which, from a distance, are pretty
    good.

Overall I'm very happy with it - well worth the 215 it cost. However,
the only thing I have to compare it with is an LA50 type printer. In my
opinion, the LC10 is better in most respects even before you talk about
    the colour.

One piece of advice: Use ordinary black ribbons for regular use and
only load up your colour ribbons when you need to. Colour ribbons are
almost twice the price of black.

I don't personally own one, but my kid brother bought one last year &
he seems well pleased with it.

He also tends to use a plain black ribbon, only loading the colour
ribbon for coloured printouts, otherwise it takes three passes per line
to squeeze a kind of muddy black out of the red, yellow & blue bands on
the colour ribbon. This is the only 'gripe', if you can call it that,
    that he has with it.

btw, he also has a cheap (eg 50 ish) digitiser attachment added. It
consists of an adapter which plugs into the Midi port, & a pair of
Fibre-optic cables which you fix to your print head somehow.

Result? His LC10 doubles up as a pretty reasonable means of digitising
coloured images into Degas or NEO format files.

    Get one !

873.3I have one and......BAHTAT::REIDFri May 25 1990 04:4016
I have one and am well pleased. The colour ribbon has four colours on
it RED, Yellow, Blue and BLACK. Black only takes one pass!!! The issue
with the colour ribbon is that the black is worn out before any of the
other colours if you are just printing text. Since the coloured ribbons
are twice the price of Black only I use Black ribbons for text and only
insert the colour ribbon when needed.
Paper parking and single page feed are great.
The only concerns I have are the print density and ribbon life. The
density is very poor in normal mode and I find I have to use letter
quality mode if I intend to keep the printed output for any lenght of
time. I have used more LC10 ribbons in 6 months than I did LA100
ribbons in 5 years!!. I still use my LA100 for big quick print runs.

Worth buying if you need coloured output occasionally.

    Regards Kev.
873.4Thanks, but now this...RUTILE::BISHOPDon't touch that red butt...boomTue May 29 1990 05:3717
Well thanks for the input guys, i went ahead and ordered one.
Just gotta wait for it now.

On another note (mr mod - please move in ness.)

I'd like to start to use the atari for business purposes and am
therefor looking for 'plug in and go' disk drives. This should include
power and case etc . I am not into making your own HD up ;-)

Looking for both a HD and 2nd floppy.

HD should be around 15/20 meg.

Floppy should be SINGLE SIDED (yes ! i have quite a few applications
that DONT run on my new DS drive!)

Offers to me on rutile{fnyfs,flocon,neige,glace}::bishop or bishop@fyo.
